Slow cast bullets for deer?

I have a Mosin-Nagant that shoots 200gr cast bullets (Lyman 314299) at 1600 fps very well. I have this gun dedicated to cast bullets and really enjoy shooting it. Is this gonna have enough energy to efficiently kill a deer at ranges up to 100 yards?

I have other guns but was wanting to use the M-N if possible.

You can certainly kill a deer with that.

That's plenty good, so long as you know the trajectory.

Gas check? Those can be driven to around 1,800 or a bit more without leading the barrel. Hard-cast with gas check, probably to 2,000

It should do fine with that...my .44mag and .45lc shooting 250gr cast at 1200fps will pollaxe a deer at 80yds for sure as this is about my max range with the revolvers, they would probably do it at 100yds but I have not tried them at that range.

If you think about it, folks were killing deer and everything on the face of the earth with pure lead bullets going about 1400 fps long before we invented smokeless powder. My .54 cal muzzleloader shoots a 230 grain lead ball going about fast and for centuries people thought that was a whiz-bang game load. Everyone on the continent took game with a rifle like that.

Yessir, that Mosin will do fine.

If you can aim what you are shooting at, you'll certainly kill a deer with it.

It should work fine but I thought folks in Illinois were required to hunt with shotguns.

Will work nicely.

I've killed a truckload or two with a muzzleloader pushing a 240-250 grain saboted bullet at speeds of 1600 fps or so. You're just about guaranteed that your round will still be traveling faster than mine was when it reaches the deer due to it's better sectional density being a heavy .30cal vs. a .45cal

Correct. I hunt in Wisconsin.

Gas check?
Definitely.

Muzzleloaders and handguns have a larger diameter bullet, thus putting a bigger hole through the deer making expansion a moot point. I'm not sure if my bullets (water quenched wheel weights) will expand/deform unless I hit a bone. I assume they will just put a 30 cal hole through like a FMJ. I know a flat meplat would be better. Any thoughts?

IMHO I think your on the right track. I'm sure they'd work as would FMJ but a proper expanding bullet will probably make a cleaner (read faster) kill.
My own personal ethics meter would tell me getting close enough to make a clean headshot would be in order if I was gonna use a 30 cal non expanding bullet.

Wheel weights are fairly soft, and should expand redily at that velocity.

Maybe do an informal test with wet newspaper to see what to expect.

I would not expect them to act like an FMJ.

Testing will tell you more than anyone here can, but I would expect deformation of the nose, at least. BTW, I'd also expect a dead deer.

They will expand some. Think about why your hunting bullet has a little lead exposed at the tip, it's deformation starts the expansion.
