Choke question.

I was wondering, if you shoot the wad with the pellets, and the wad surrounds the pellets, what exactly does a choke DO? for example, I just bough winchester's "Blindside" and the wad surrounds the pellets, and the wad leaves out the barrel. How does the choke restrict the pellets if there's something surrounding the pellets?

The choke compresses the wad and pellet payload at the same time...

I can walk down range of the firing line at the local turkey shoot and pick up wads. Since all shells will be identical and handed out by the host, The wads are identical construction.

I can tell a difference in wads run thru different chokes. The guys using "Double X Full" turkey type chokes really put the squeeze on the wad. Much deeper dimples inside and the petals even seem to be more radically and/or violently opened as well.

The general purpose of the shot cup is to prevent shot from being deformed during its journey down the barrel and through the choke's constriction, and thus provide better pattern density (by reducing the number of flyers). The pliability of the wad is sufficient to allow the shoot to be constricted in the same manner as it would be without a shot cup. With various designs, shot cups can also spread or contain the pattern to some extent.

Oh that makes sense. So it restricts the wad AND pellets.
Thank you for clearing that up.
