1903A3 Serial Number ?

I've searched the web and found a location that has Springfield 1903 Serial Numbers for Springfield/Remington/Corona. However the number on the gun I've purchased does not show on these lists - thoughts? The number is 3796919.

Serial # 3796919 was allocated to Remington (3,708,000 - 4,707,999)

Don't know the date yours was made, but to give you an ideal they started making 1903A3's May 21, 1942.

I know, don't help much, sorry.

If you are conserned about receiver strength , all of the A3s are safe to shoot , 800,000 was the cutoff !

In addition to this, it was among the first of the 03 Modified rifles. Steel was changed from 2340 to ANSI 4140 for the receiver. The barrel should have a date of February or March 1943 if it is original as manufactured. So many were rebuilt and some many times during their life that the only part that is original is the receiver. Providing the head space is good, it's a good action/receiver.

I think your rifle(3796919) was manufactured around July of 1943. The barrel dates vary some, but should be marked anywhere from 1-3 months prior to the rifle's manufacture. I have a Rem 03-A3 made in June 1943 with a barrel date of 4-43.

Try this site for more information.

I got the year of 1942 from oldguns.net. I don't know about the other sites out there but oldguns.net has always been my go-to site for US Military rifle dates. There is a Remington model that would have a manufacture year of 1943 with that serial number but it's the 1903A4...

"All Remington 1903A4 production was in 1943 and fell between serial numbers 3407088 and 4998320. Remington made all 29,964 Model 1903A4 rifles. 1903A4 receivers were all marked MODEL 03-A3, but the markings are offset to be readable when the Redfield Junior scope mount base is installed. Some but not all Remington 1903A4 serial numbers have a Z prefix. Model 1903A4 rifles fall in three serial number blocks: 3407088 to 34427087, 4992001 to 4999045, and Z4000000 to Z4002920. It is speculated but not verified that scrapped receivers which were recovered had a letter 'A' hand stamped before the serial number."

Cheers,
John

You have to watch the manufacture dates on oldguns.net, as some of the results can be off by quite a bit. This seems to be especially true with regard to Winchester products. I have a U.S. marked Model 97 shotgun that was manufactured in 1942, but the serial number on their site comes up with the year of man. as 1946.
