Do I need to crimp

My 300 win mag bullets? Also need to ask about 338 RUM? I don't have any problems crimping pistol bullets but I have never really tried rifle bullets.

If you don’t want your bullets moving around in the case mouth under recoil, you will most certainly want to apply at least some crimp, especially with such a powerful cartridge as 300 mag. If you don't have any problems crimping pistol bullets you won’t have any problems crimping rifle bullets.

It depends. Do you single load or have cartridges in the mag when you shoot? If you single load, no crimp is needed.

If you load from the mag you can check to see if your neck tension is adequate. Load the mag and shoot one or two. Check the next rounds before you fire tem and see if the bullets is pulling out of the case. If it isn't you don't need a crimp.

If the bullet doesn't have a cannelure I wouldn't crimp in any case. (Or if the cannelure doesn't line up with the preferred seating depth.)

When I first started reloading I tried a crimp on a 308 case and I wound up crushing the shoulder. So I have not tried again. Should the crimp on these look similar to the crimp on my 44 mag or should I only be able to notice the crimp with a set of Mic's?

I never crimp any rifle bullets (excluding my 38/357s in my Marlin 94CS where I use cast bullets and use the same bullets in my revolvers.). I've never had a bullet move. If it does you need to check your die, they do wear out.

I certainly wouldn't crimp my 300 Win, as its my 1000 yard target rifle.

I shoot some pretty heavy guns, 375 H&H, 458 WM, 416 Rigby, again I never had to crimp either of those either.

I defiantly wont crimp my target rounds.

I've had a .300 Win. Mag for at least 25 years and have yet to crimp my ammo . I have never had any Bullet movement that I could detect !

i DO crimp, but have some friends that do not. i also always out shoot them at the range. i don't know how much is due to the crimp, but i'm not stopping any time soon.

It depends on what your rifle likes. It's another of those variables that we have to explore.
