Newbie question: Ammo for Marlin 1894 in Southern California

Hi all, Scott here. I'm going to be getting my new Marlin 1894SS this weekend. Got a question for the SoCal hunters here:
What is a good, legal, and safe cartridge (tubular magazine, you know) for my rifle for hunting in Southern Calfornia Condor Lead Free zones?
Mostly interested in Deer and wild pig.
Rifle is Marlin 1894SS, .44 mag.
Done a lot of looking through posts and didn't find anything specific on SoCal.
Pretty interested in the Hornady LeverEvolution, but not sure if it's legal in SoCal... Also a little worried about the Marlin Jam, but We'll get there when we get there...
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Go easy on the new guy, please.

Also a little worried about the Marlin Jam,
Can't help you with Southern California. The last time I was there, courtesy of the US gummint, I was at a little training base just outside of 29 Stumps, and they made us shoot all manner of weapons.

But, I can say with some authority, don't worry about the Marlin Jam. It normally only happens in rifles that are run fast and hard, like in SASS shooting. It's easily fixed and for most folks is never an issue.

Don't worry about the Marlin Jam unless you're running your rifle fast and hard.

That said, there's a page that explains it easily and tells how to fix it.
