got sig?

I just purchased an older p-6 [p-225) was a correction officers side arm and rarely if ever range fired. Aside from the 'smallish' hand stock I love it, up there with my 59 series s and w's. However, I'd like to hear some pros and cons from you experts or afficiandos. And would like to know iif grips can be changed and if so where they may be obtained. I've always received excellent advise here and in advance thank anyone that shoots an idea my way.......................
expert------an ex is a 'has been' and a 'spert' is a drip under pressure. Do I want to known as a has been drip under pressure?

The grips can be replaced with any grip made for the P225. If you want grips that are larger, try some wood ones.

http://marschalgrips.com/?content=SIG-models

It takes a while for them to get made then shipped to the states. You also need to fill in most of the hole for the hammer pin on the left grip to keep the hammer pin from coming out. That takes a couple of minutes work at the worst.

For the most part the P6 is a P225. The hammer has a notch cut in it and they have heavier hammer springs which makes the double action heavy and are stamped P6. Those are the main differences. They are pretty good in my opinion to use as a carry pistol or just to use at the range. Magazines are a bit high in price.

I love my P6. Deadly accurate and fun to shoot. The slide had some holster wear so I had it coated here: http://www.customizedcreationz.com/
Internals were like new. The grip is Pachmyr. Great gun. Totally reliable. A bit heavy to carry, though.

I just bought my first P6 tonight. Pretty good shape. A little bit of holster wear, but that's to be expected.

I got the gun and 3 magazines for $350, came home and spend another $85 in parts from TGS. I ordered the standard hammer, hammer spring, and P225 parts kit which included recoil spring, decocker spring, slide catch spring, roll pins, etc.

I want to find one of the short triggers but every place is sold out. I may just get one of the ones from custom creationz, but I'd rather get the official one if possible. I plan on dropping it off at Robar as well to have it refinished. I haven't decided yet if I'm goign to do NP3 or Roguard, or a combination yet.

Should be a fun project.

Also, my P229 E2 should be delivered tomorrow(Monday). Can't wait to get that thing.

If it wasn't obvious... I love my Sigs, and I'm sure you will too!

Not trying to hijack here, but I think it's good to point out that there is a lot that you can do with a Sig P6, and it makes a great project pistol - being fairly inexpensive... Here are a few examples of some P6's that I think are really slick.

The first one is actually owned by our very own "David the Gnome".

It's slightly larger than the P239, but many people find it to be more ergonomic. I personally dislike the squared front of the P239's grip, but other than that it's pretty nice. I think the back end it s little ugly - wishing the beaver-tail came out a little more, but that's simply personal aesthetics.

You probably have a wider array of holsters available for the P239, so that's something to consider. Also, pre 1989 P6 models often require barrel re-crowning in order to reliably feed hollow point ammunition - another thing to consider.

The thread below shows some images of the P6 and P239 side by side from different angles.

?? Do you have a question?

If you didn't know about this, do some research on the gun. The earlier models were not designed to feed JHP. Some still do just fine...

You can send it to Sig to be recrowned or Customized Creationz to have that issue resolved for a fairly cheap price.

I thought recrowning a barrel reshaped the business end, not the feed ramp.

Hello, New Forum Member Here...
Just thought I would 'Chime-in', as I also have a P6(1979 vintage), and absolutely Love-it !!!
Here's what I have done to Mine;
Replaced Stock Grips w/Pachmayr's...
Replaced Hammer-Spring w/19lb. from Topgun Supply...
Polished Feed-ramp(myself), and some of the Internals ...

The P6 has Never had any Issues whatsoever w/JHP, or anything I've Fed-it...

I see you live in Phoenix. I suggest you give Tim at www.acoating.com in Peoria a call. He did my P-6 and it looks new, he also did a silver color Ceracoat on my P228 and we kept the slide Deep Black. He does great work and is very reasonable. His company is called Alternative Firearm Coatings, he does gunsmithing also. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I discovered him in the Phoenix Back Page ad. Lucky me.

The $250 P6 is the gun that got me hooked on Sigs. I never gave them a look prior to the P6 because I thought they were to expensive. Now I've owned the P6, 2 P226s, P239 and a P232. I've sold the P6 and the P239, but wish I'd started with a Sig and I would have saved a lot of money on guns over the last 20 years. Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip AZRanger. I may have to do that. For the P6, I don't want to dump a ton of money into it, but I like the look of NP3, however... I really like the bottom one in this picture... So I may go that route at half the price or less of what the NP3 would cost!!

I dropped my P6 off at Robar this morning for a complete NP3 treatment on slide/frame/internals. I asked what the turn around we are looking at currently and was told 6 weeks, which is quite a bit less than the usually reported 8-12 weeks. I assume that there is not as big of a back log at the moment, so it may be a good time to send in your guns if you've been thinking about getting NP3 done!

I was waiting until I got all of my 'upgrade' parts delivered and installed for the P6 before I dropped it off. I finally got everything finished up yesterday afternoon. The upgrades that I did to it include the solid style hammer, short trigger from customized creationz, standard P225 weight mainspring, and P225 'parts kit' - which includes recoil spring, decocker spring, trigger spring, locking block spring, grip screws, etc... The gun feels really nice with the lighter spring and short trigger.

I also ordered these grips after I dropped the gun off at Robar. I can't wait to get it back and see how she runs!

With the cost of the gun, the grips, parts, and Robar, I'm now going to have a little over $800 into the gun... which is probably a little absurd for a P6, but that's okay. I'm not doing it for 'resale value'. I'm doing it so the gun is mine...

Yep, for that price you could have bought a new 225, but you would not have had the fun of getting it just like you want it.

I did pick up that new 225, and I like it.
