I don't know how mine shoots yet. I got a 12FV in a 22-250 (not a low profile) in late December and recently put a VX-III 6.5-20LR. I have been getting different loads setup to test and if the weather is good this weekend I will finally get to go to the range.

I have a model 12 VLP in 22-250... She drives tacks... I would try the 75 grain hornady v-max in that .243...

That's a lot of gun for those critters... Have you considered getting a 22-250 barrel to screw onto that receiver? -tINY |

Savage 110, .243
I'm the owner of a Savage .243 also, but a 110 "J" series. Its got the prettiest piece of walnut you ever saw for a Savage. It belonged to my Dad. I'm not sure why he bought it, he owned a push feed M70 in .270. Maybe the look.
Again the wood is fine. Somebody was asleep when they cut a Savage production rifle from that blank. Anyhow..... He shot it better than any centerfire he ever owned. I believe, for one reason, that it kicked less, but I'd have never told him that. Dad's 110 is the only .243 with which I have any experience. For a long time, , I was a .243 basher, and felt they were not enough gun for deer. I gave a buddy in college a really hard time. Now I have seen a few more deer killed w/ any variety of calibers, than in those brazen days and make no such fool of myself. Dad's rifle came w/ several boxes of Rem 100 gr SP's, and the deer I've shot w/ it, as well as my teenage son, were plenty dead. The boy's shot BTW, posted else where, was 260 yds on his first buck, a spike. This old Savage (its a long action) will shoot into an inch (100 yds, 3 shots) w/ the Rem factory ammo and a 3-9 Leu VX-II. The trigger was absolutely awful when it came into my hands, I don't see how Dad managed it. A bit of careful tweaking yielded a useable switch. I zero 2" high at 100, figure on at 200. I have some Nosler 100 gr partitions on hand for reloads, but am still shooting Dad's ammo. I know of several others that are hunting deer regularly w/ .243. They are all shooting reloads w/ the Nosler 95 gr Ballistic Tip. They say that sometimes no exits, but much damage and DRT. |

I loaded a bunch of 55-grain for a prairie dog hunt. Sure, "overkill", but plenty good to 300 yards, easily.
I've killed some 20+ bucks with Sierra's 85-grain HPBT, but I limit my shots to either neck or cross-body heart/lung. I won't take an angling shot; I doubt the adequate penetration. Mostly neck shots; all DRT. That load is ruinacious on coyotes.

are those 55 grains bullets from Nosler. Thats what im gonna use this summer but i heard the bullet is to small and will 'tear' apart. but the twist in my rifle is 1:9 slower than normal rifles.
