00 buck & old shotgun

Would 2 3/4 00 buck be safe to fire in an old JC HIGGINS 12 ga. in decent shape? Made in 47 I believe.

I don't see why not. Have it checked by a gunsmith to make sure there is nothing actually wrong with the gun, but it should be OK.

Sure. They shot buckshot just fine out of it in '47. Just make sure it is in good operating condition.

I've used it for pheasant before and did just fine. Just curious about the buckshot. Thanks for your replies. I just joined here so I might have a few questions.

Yes. A decade older and I'd tell you to have a smith check it out first, but any shotgun younger than me should be OK with 2 3/4" buck loads.

Do stick with 9 pellet or RR 8 pellet 00.....

Hey thanks for your reply. Seeing how it is 63 yrs old I was kinda worried about the potent 00. I'll check out the barrel a little closer.

Yeah, I used to fire 00 at a prison all the time during training. It does get old on the shoulder.

Indeed, in those days a recoil pad was unheard of. Metal buttplates, sometimes plastic, no cushy soft rubber for you! .

I've got an old Remington 31 12 ga. that I pull out once every dove season. After 5 or 10 rounds I'm back to the soft shooting gas gun with the Limbsaver pad. . I haven't shot buckshot out of that old 31 in years. From what I remember it wasn't pleasant.

Excellent- you have a winner, biggun. Shouldn't be any problem at all with good 2.75" 00. That's about the slickest pumpgun you'll ever want to handle- I like 'em a lot.
