Worst Case Home Invasion Scenario

Okay, well, while I am 100% for prevention, there is a scenario that I have been thinking about that pretty much has me stumped so Im looking for some input. So middle of the night you wake up to a strange sound. You glance up, and you can faintly make out a large man, standing right above your bed, with a knife, or even worse a gun, now besides ruining sheets, what can you do to defend against an intruder that is already in your bedroom ready to attack when you become aware of them?

a gun......... you're pretty much at his mercy depending on caliber/gauge etc.

a knife........ you have some slim chance depending on where you have your weapon

Get a dog, and you will never be taken by surprise.
Better yet, get two or three.
I may be biased

Your only real chance is cooperation until you can get your hands on a weapon.

However, if you have ANY sort of security system in place then this scenario is a virtual impossibility. Even locked doors and windows will ensure that you have at least a few seconds warning. A dog will give you even more time, an alarm helps. The only way this scenario could really happen is if you have ZERO preparations in place. In which case, you won't likely have considered what to do in this scenario either.

I agree with orionengnr. Get a dog or two. This is what happens when someone walks up to our house.

Dealing with what was presented:
I have heard of two schools of thought on this type of scenerio-
1) is to cooperate until you can put together some type of plan for escape or defense
2) is to fight, kick, scream, bite, punch, throw, and do anything possible to interupt the BG's plan and hope you scare him or confuse him eoough to get away or win the fight.
The key to either approach is to NEVER tell yourself that its over, and understand that this is probably going to hurt. But thats ok as long as you live!! Quitting is never an option in this scenerio
You always have two options......Win or Win!!!!!
It doesnt matter how-
Armed adversaries can be overtaken- So just do what has to be done!!!
The best way is the way that allows you to tell someone else what worked for you!!
Does that make any sense?

1st line of defence

Get a dog, I'm not a big fan of "Kick Me" dogs but even a poodle will give you a s..t load of warning. Besides, nobody loves ya like your dog.
After a particularly long commute home one evening a guy met me at my car door after I pulled into my driveway. He was selling home alarm systems. I was tired and a bit grumpy and besides that I really just don't like door to door sales people. When he asked me if I was interested in a home alarm system I told him "I have a dog and a gun, I don't need a damn alarm system" I was very gratified to see him make tracks. Actually I live at the end of a court and I've got great neighbors, and a Labrador retriever.

Prevent what you describe. Motion detector in hallway to bedroom with the "sounding unit" right next to your bed. He'll run. If not you can have your gun in hand when he comes in.

I agree with several others on here. Get some dogs. If you are alergic then get an alarm system. Something else that we do is plant rose bushes in front of all the windows. It looks good for the landscaping and helps to prevent entry, atleast silent entry, from those points.

One thing that I would strongly suggest is for everyone that carries a gun from day to day take a class on weapons disarming and retention. I think that training on how to disarm an assailant is just as important as learning how to shoot one. The more options you have in any scenario the higher the chance of surviving.

That scenario has to be avoided at all cost. Window bars, steel gates securing doors, aluminum doors or solid wood doors, first class locks and dead bolts with stubbs, a gate separating the rooms from the rest of the house. An alarm system (cameras and movement sensors optional for being expensive) and or dog or two. You are most vulnerable when entering or exiting hour house.

If your wife is hot, tell the guy, "Hey you want my wife, its ok I just like to watch." When the guy is distracted , you grab your gun and shoot him.

If your wife is a ugly tell the guy, " You see what I'm sleeping with, do me a favor and kill me quick."

I actually keep one in the bed right alongside me, under the sheets. I don't have one in the chamber though as it is an XD with no manual safety and I don't want to accidentally do something in my sleep. Perhaps a model handgun with manual and grip safety...Hmmm... Perfect excuse to make another purchase!

(Maybe I need a girlfriend actually...)
