Blackk Powder elk hunt

It is no fun to have something good happen without a little braggin. So here goes.

My son got a nice big 6 X 6 elk with a .54 Hawkin by Cabelas. He was using a 425 gr. Great Plains over 90 grains of Triple Seven and a #11 magnum cap.
The elk was lying down chewing his cud watching us. My son shot from around 80-100 yards away off-hand and nailed the elk in the ribs. The big bull never got to his feet. The test for CWD (wasting disease) came back as "None Detected." The antlers are nice but nothing spectacular, around 38 inches from the skull cap to the tips and 36 inches width from tip to tip. All the same, it was a darned good take.

I was watching as the bullet hit the animal, and the dust flew out of his coat. The bullet did not exit, but he was bleeding from the nose by the time we got reloaded and walked over. The lungs were full of blood.

At the range, the Great Plains was chronied at 1475 fps and was really consistent. The gun has a 1/48 twist.

Braggin over.

That's AWESOME!

I shoot a Hawken Renegade .54 Cal, and it's the most accurate shooting BP rifle I've ever shot.

It's a work of art and "knocks 'em dead"

Not to get off on a tangent, but is that voluntary or mandatory? Is there any CWD found in the wild population? I love to hunt and eat elk but that stuff concerns me.

I always wanted to muzzle load hunt during the rut. We always bowhunted since there was no season for it in the area we hunted.

Wasting Disease

The testing is no longer madatory. This elk was taken near Fort Collins, Colorado. If you go to the Colorado Division of Wildlife website they have good info about this. There is a map that shows the hunt areas and gives some data about the incidence of CWD. There is also a page that shows the actual number of animals of different species tested from each hunt unit, and how many were positive. If you can get on this link:

http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/CWD/

Just copy and past into google, then you can get the page.

Fantastic shot and testiment to the fact that you don't need 150grn. loads to make a lethal and clean kill. Also that mass kills and that is why many hunters prefer the .54's. Also glad to see that the old #11's work for him. Perhaps I missed it but what propellant were you using? My compliments al the way !!!

Be Safe !!!
