22.250 loads
Hi
I have just bought a remington .22/250 vssf. I had the barrel cut down to 22 inch and threaded for a wildcat sound moderator. I have loaded 4 different loads from 34 grains of varget up to the max of 36 grains all using 55 grain nosler ballistic tips. None have produced a good group. Any other recipes that work well |

More info
Hi, Tam.
First of all, Welcome to TFL! When you say they don't group well, what kinds of groups are you getting? Just so I have an idea of what kind of accuracy you're looking for. ![]() What COL are you using for your loads? I'm wondering if you're seating them too far off the lands, this may have some effect on accuracy. The 22-250 is a pretty hot cartridge. Also, what is the twist rate of your barrel? My $0.02, McClintock |

The groups are 1.5inch at 100m. To seat the bullet i put a lightly resised bullet into my rifle with a head just entered into the case, I then closed the bolt slowly which pushed the head further into the case when it hit the lans. I then seated it about a mill deeper. I would be expecting my bullets to be touching at 100m. There is a 6.5/20x50 leopold scope on this rifle.
Thanks Tam |

I dont think shortening your barrel helped your accuracy any-
My savage 22-250 with a 26" barrel loves 34 gr. of Varget under a 55 Hornady "Blitz" bullet. It will put three rounds in a nickle at 100 yrds all day.... Those were my first reloads and I havent even played with other recipes yet. Just my two cents |

When I had one it liked the 55 grain v-max with IMR-4064 you might give it a try. Good manual and start at the min. Have fun!

Tam, sounds like you've done pretty much everything I would have done, not that I am an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I'd try one of the other recipes posted, perhaps your particular rifle just doesn't like that particular powder/bullet combination. Some rifles definitely have a preference for particular powders and bullets.
Hope you find your ideal load, keep us posted! Cheers! McClintock |

Actually 1.5 inch 100 meter groups WITH a silencer is pretty good. I doubt you're going to do better.

Thanks for all the advice.
Also thanks to snuffy for the leason on terminology. I have used the same moderator on a previous .22/250 and was putting bullets on top of each other at 100m. I will be most unhappy if i cannot improve my groups at 100m. What would a 1.5inch group be at 300m other than a miss. |
