Hornady 500gr RN 45-70
Hey guys,
New to the forum - been lurking for ages but never had to as a question. Anyway, I have a hundred or so Hornady 500gr Jacketed RN Interlocks left over after I sold the .458. I have a Shiloh 1874 Sharps .45-70 and would like to how these would go through the rifle and what loads would be good. I have the Lyman reloading manual but most of the heavy grain rounds are listed as cast bullets, so I'm wondering if someone has a specific load, or would just advise against? Cheers, Mark |

sasreg,
Your Shilo is plenty strong enough to shoot those 500gr jacketed bullets(Ruger #1 rules apply). The Hornady's reloading manual has the loading data as well as the Hodgden/IMR web site.I would load them to the lower end of the data with slow powders say 1300-1400 fps.To load them faster would make the recoil fairly uncomfortable even in the Shilo unless you have bull barrel. |

How long is the throat on your rifle ? if it is fairly long, you could load them longer than the book says. Don't expect them to expand very much at 1300ish fps, I'd be more inclined to sell them and get something you normally use.

I would love to have some of those just for curiosity sake.

They will do fine. Keep the loads light and don't expect much expansion.

Be sure to get any lead fouling out before shooting jacketed, and get the copper out before going back to real bullets.
