38-40 bullet in 10mm Magnum as a deep penitrating bullet ???

I'm in the early stages of thinking about reloading another batch of 10 Mag ammo... ( nowdays when I work up loads, I do a target load, a hunting load, & a deep penitrating load )

I'm not seeing a good penitrator bullet with whats currently available I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this bullet ???

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=323434

...in the longer 10 Mag case, used mostly in my Contender barrel, & my new 10 Mag revolver... the case should be plenty long enough for the faster powders, & thier wouldn't be any feed issues like in a normal auto ( howevr, if it would cycle through my Automag, that would be a plus )

You will probably get just the opposite effect. 38-40 revolvers would throw that slug at about 900 fps, not the 1,300 fps you are looking for out of a 10mm, so it will likely just fragment or blow up on impact. If you want a penetrator bullet, find a FMJ bullet.

An XTP can hold up to the 10mm magnum no problem.

Thanks for the replys guys...

I don't necessarily need a seperate bullet for each "type" of loading, but will probably be using the 200 grain XTP as a hunting bullet...

I see Double Tap offers a 200 grain FMJ in their 10mm stuff as a "deep penitrating round"

I just thought a good hard cast bullet might be better at penitration than a soft lead core with a copper jacket ???

A cast lead bullet with wide meplat is ideal for on game performance. A soft (12BHN) bullet will expand nicely and a hard bullet might shatter on impact. Most of my cast bullets for hunting are 12-14 BHN.

WOW!!

First... I applaud you for sniff'in out some good looking bullets for "experimental" rounds!!

Quote:
Oregon Trail's ad: Laser-Cast bullets feature an alloy made from silver and 7 other elements to produce a bullet of unprecedented consistency and precision. This silver bearing alloy along with low-smoke lube yields ultra-high velocities and extreme accuracy without leading even at jacketed bullet speeds.
The 1st thing I thought after seeing what you are wanting to load, was that the bullet would leave excessive leading. After reading what it is made of, IMHO you should try them out & see what type of ballistics you wind up with. Sounds like a GREAT load for for your AutoMag!

Not flaming who posted the above, but IMHO even a regular "old school" pure lead bullet wouldn't "blow up" @ the velocities of the hottest 10mm load. A hollow point maybe.... , but not a flat-nose bullet.

That said.... My FAVORITE load in .357Sig is a 85gr JHP Winchester Silvertip from a .380 auto (.355) over 11.4gr of PowerPistol in a Starline case. I once shot this load into a swimming pool, & what I recovered was 5 pc. of shredded jacket & about 22gr of lead.

ft. lbs. @ muzzle = 560.3
fps = 1723

This .357Sig load does more damage to a 1 gal. water jug than a hot JHP .44mag!!

The exception is the low antimony hardened bullets that are quench-hardened; they hold up well. They are not nearly so brittle as those made hard by alloying up into Linotype and the like. The loads sold by Randy Garrett for example. To follow up on Sam's suggestion, in 10mm there is a 200 grain 21 BHN Beartooth bullet that fits the description. As Freakshow 10mm said, the wide meplats are astonishingly effective on game. The wound channels are less wide than some rapid expanders, but they extend deeper, ruin less meat, and make for a lot of DRT shots.

As to penetration, momentum and sectional density usually combine tell that tale. Three years ago or so, Handloader had a story on some 300 grain boattails in .45 ACP. The slight boattail was needed to seat the bullets in the .45 ACP case past the point the brass gets thicker on approach to the head. Otherwise they bulge the case and won't chamber. I recall the velocity he could get from the minimal amount of remaining powder space was about 700 fps. Nonetheless, it outpenetrated 230 grain hardball in wet newspaper by 26" to 18".

At any rate, I think, for penetration, you want the heaviest weight you can get as your starting point. Frankly, a round or pointed nose will penetrate farther than a flat one, but the flat one is a real game stopper.

heavy

I've gone as heavy as cast 220g from both the 40 S&W and 10mm, and I still have a stash of Hornady's 200g FMJ-FN (the Speer 200g FMJ is also a heavily constructed choice), but I might suggest investigating the Beartooth and freakshow heavy-lead choices.

A 200--230g .400" bullet launched over 1200fps penetrates a loooong way.....

I cast them myself and have the only mold that exists. I took them off my site and just sell them locally. Let me know your address and when I get some cast I'll send a few your way to try out. Seating to the crimp groove make a 1.27" OAL with a 10mm Auto. I don't have a Magnum yet so I don't know how that will seat. The round pictured is a dummy round with a severe crimp to keep the bullet in place as a chamber fit check gauge.
