Caliber options with a standard AR-15 Lower

I recently picked up a CMMG AR-15 lower. I dont really need another .223/5.56 rifle but the price was right and I thought it might be fun to build my own AR over the next 6 months or so.

Right now I am trying to come up with ideas on what type (caliber) of upper to eventually put on it. I've heard good things about the 6.5 Grendel... What other calibers could I consider with this build in mind?

ar

i have a 6mm/.223 its great for 400 yards the 6.5 is a great round but you have to buy diff. mags and ammo is high as hell make sure you get a fast twist barrel for the 100g bullet

Whew, plenty of options. 6.5 Grendel and also 6.8 SPC. I have heard that 6.8 is better to get as there are far more options (more bullet variety).

You can also get:
- 7.62x39
- 5.45x39
- .22LR
- 5.7
- .50 Beowulf
- .410 shotgun

I'm sure there are other options out there too, but this shows what you could expect.

Hell, if 8mm Kurz were a reasonable price, I would be supporting that!

Thanks guys! I didn't realize there were that many options. I will have to do my research and see what I can come up with In the meantime, the 6.8 sounds pretty good.

What would you build, starting with a standard AR-15 lower (other than .223/5.56?)

I asked your exact question about a year ago. Now I'm waiting on an optic mount to complete my 6.8 - mostly Stag and CMMG parts with a WOA barrel. I've slapped my LT-104-mounted Nikon while I wait on the mount and I really, really like it. The reports from whitetail and hogs are impressive.

I was a credit card number away from the 6.5. I shied away because it seemed, like another guy said, parts and ammo were harder to come by. I thought (and still think) the 6.5 was more likely to end up obscure than the 6.8. I could be totally wrong and they both end up forgotten.

All things 6.8: http://www.68forums.com/index.php

ETA: If you choose the 6.8, make sure you join the above forums and look for the "correct" barrel specs. In a nutshell, you want M4 feedramps, a 1:11 twist and a SPCII chamber... and lots of ammo because everyone will want to shoot it when you take it to the range. Most have never heard of 6.8.

Better listen up George...

There is a FAR BETTER selection of 6.5mm bullets suitable for the 6.5x38mm Grendel than 6.8mm bullets suitable for the 6.8x43mm SPC.
