Is the magazine spring retainer really needed?

I get tired of trying to work it this thing loose with a screwdriver when I take apart my 870, is this spring retainer really needed? Will any problems arise if I installed installed the magazine cap without it?

I do not put them back in my guns after removing. You just have to be careful when removing the cap later. The gun functions just fine.

No it is not really needed. It does make barrel changes with sporting guns very easy.

A question, one does not need to remove the mag spring follower or retainer to work or service the gun, "besides occasionally cleaning the mag tube", why mess with the retainer?
