Brand new (Refurbished) Ak-47 questions
I took it to the range for the first time today. I shot one 30 round clip and smoke started coming from every where. Is this just the oil heating up? It continued to do it just as bad 4 clips later.
I also noticed a strange gas-like smell while firing. Is that normal. Is $300+ tax the going rate for 1000 rounds of ammo? Thanks. Last edited by LSUdominates; April 13, 2009 at 05:18 PM. Reason: Forgot to ask question. |

I might as well mention it before someone else does.
It's a magazine, (or mag), not a clip. Did you disassemble and clean the rifle before shooting it? If not, you really should as there may be oil and other gunk in there from the refinishing process or sometimes on for storage and shipping. Before shooting anymore, I'd recommend complete disassembly and thorough cleaning.

Probably a silly question but was it in cosmoline, or have residue one it?
I only ask because I recently purchased one that was mostly clean and when I took it apart I noticed there was more cosmoline on the inside. Also the last mags I purchased i took apart and cleaned one of them had a whole huck of cosmo under the follower. |

If its a refurbished AK, chances are, instead of parking or bluing, the gun was painted with black stove paint. As that paint gets hot, it "cures" and in the process gives off some smoke and smells awful.
After building mine, I had the same issue for the first few range trips. Just give her a good cleaning, and keep shooting!

There's a bunch of chemicals from the rounds themselves as well as the rifle and cleaning chemicals to burn off. It's normal.
And yes, right now $300/1000 rounds is probably not unreasonable. 7.62x39 seems to be a little hard to find at the moment- it seems to show up in spurts. |
