"If I Only Had A Gun" on ABC 4/10/09 WATCH IT!

Show coming on tonight on channel 44 10 PM 9 Central standard time. The show is called "If I only had a gun" I only saw a brief commercial about the show...but it looks like it runs through a bunch of scenarios like you guys go through on here. Like the "Bank is being robbed I have my CCW on me do I shoot?" scenarios. I dont know if its going to be good or not...I dont normally PLAN to watch T.V. but I think I will tonight : D

P.S. in case the channels are different 44 for me is discovery.

Saw the advertisement for it this morning on the news (assuming we're talking about the same thing) and I'd be extremely shocked if it wasn't overtly anti-gun. Seemed like the whole point of the program (from the little bit they showed) was to make it out that average Joe-citizen shouldn't/couldn't be trusted with a gun, because we're not "highly trained" like the LEO community. Wait, what's that..........uh oh.......oh boy....:barf::barf::barf:

http://tv.msn.com/tv/episode/20-20/if-i-only-had-a-gun/

It is a 20/20 episode tonight. ABC.

http://www.nt2099.com/J-ENT/news/ame...news-2020-410/

“IF I ONLY HAD A GUN,” A REPORT BY DIANE SAWYER
AND DAVID MUIR, ON ABC NEWS’ “20/20,” FRIDAY, APRIL 10

When it comes to protecting yourself, you may think “if I only had a gun.” But if you had a gun, could you protect yourself in a crisis? How easy is it to obtain a gun? And what explains the nearly irresistible attraction of young people to firearms? Diane Sawyer investigates, with reporting by David Muir, on “If I Only Had a Gun,” airing on “20/20,” FRIDAY, APRIL 10 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. The hour also features hidden camera experiments and expert analysis.

There are an estimated 250-300 million guns in civilian hands in this country - almost enough to arm every man, woman and child in America. In fact, Americans are believed to own a third of all the existing firearms in the world. And that number is quickly growing: Last year there were 12 million background checks of people buying guns or getting or renewing a permit. America also has the highest rate of gun violence in the industrial world. Reports include:

Why shouldn’t we all have guns? Almost half of all handgun owners say self defense is their primary reason for owning a gun. But can they get to their gun in time when in a crisis situation? Can they aim accurately? And what is the chance they will hit someone innocent instead of their target? “20/20″ set up a hidden camera experiment to see what would happen if everyone, including those with gun training, had a gun when an armed intruder bursts through the door. Diane Sawyer reports.

How easy is it to buy a gun? In 33 states across the country, anyone can walk into one of the hundreds of gun shows held each year and buy a gun without a background check run and no questions asked. In the two years since Omar Samaha’s sister, Reema, was murdered at Virginia Tech, he has been fighting to close the gun show loophole, a step the Virginia governor and other authorities urged lawmakers to take. Has anything changed? David Muir follows Omar as he buys guns in Virginia at a gun show. How many can he procure in an hour and how many questions will he be asked?

The effect of gun violence on one neighborhood, as seen through the eyes of a child: Ten-year-old Damon Weaver is a pint-size reporter with a supersized dream: to interview President Obama about what he plans to do about the gun violence that has torn apart his town of Pahokee, Florida. In the last year, 14 people were murdered in his neighborhood. To see the devastating effects of gun violence in one community through the eyes of a child, Damon reports first-hand for “20/20,” interviewing friends who’ve lost family members, townspeople, as well as the sheriff’s office about problems and solutions. Diane Sawyer first met Weaver during the network’s Presidential Inauguration coverage in January.

What is the irresistible attraction of young people to guns? It is not uncommon to hear news reports about young people playing with their parent’s guns and accidentally shooting their friends, sometimes killing them. Statistics show that more 18-22 year olds die from accidental shootings than any other age group. Shouldn’t college aged kids know better than to play with a gun? “20/20″ puts some of these kids to the test in a provocative experiment during which they find hidden guns while cleaning out a garage. Who will tell the adult about their find, who will pack it away without a word and who will play with the gun? And does peer pressure factor into unsafe behavior? Muir reports.

"ABC Evening News" just had their "teaser" story for the 20/20 episode. It's gonna be a winner. Armed some folks with Simunition guns and had a "shooter" run into their classroom and start shooting. One dude couldn't get his gun out. One woman froze and took hits. Another woman drew and returned fire accurately, hitting the gunman but "almost" hitting a bystander and ultimately getting shot herself (she claims she took out the gunman first).

The story line is "can you really control yourself during a shooting?" They go into the adrenaline rush and explain how LEOs go through "....months, and months and months of training to learn how to overcome this problem so they can still function and not shoot bystanders."

Yep, gonna skip the rest of this story.

I'm gonna watch it,if for no other reason than to see if they let John Stossel get anywhere near it...It should be interesting, and maybe some of us can use it to convert an anti. It's much easier to win an argument if you know what references your opponent/potential convert is using...

I'm watching it roght now as I postin here.

It has had some good suggestions about increased situation training but by and large is a "You can't hope to protect yourself in a dangerous situation with a gun " message.

They need to talk to the grandmothers that have shot robbers and burgulars, women that have shot rapists, homeowners that have shot burgulars, criminals that avoid areas filled with people confident in their ability to use guins and their right to defend who they love and what they own.

People defend themselves thousands of times a day in this country without going on a shooting spree.

A gun gets shown or simply a criminal gets the thought in his head that his victim is armed and goes the other way.

There are no statistics for these thousands upon thousands of prevented crimes but they are there everyday.

But you will never read the media report that because they have an agenda and it is simply the removal of your right to keep and bear arms.

They're even pounding the gunshow loophole.
They're really doing their best to make gunowners look like deviants, and freaks.

Just turned it on....Imna keep the computer up as I watch it so I can write down what I laugh at. Im like 98% sure this thing is going to be anti-gun :P
Well see....Ill also write everythging the people say thats incorrect:P

BEGIN!

LMAO! They even tossed in the video of the black LEO that shoots himself in the foot while telling the people about firearms safety.

One thing im noticing. They have given all the people VERY baggy sirts. (Down to the groin) Everyone is wearing the same clothes in the scenario. The scenario is thus....
Suspect enters the room and begins firing. The person with the CCW tries to remove their firearm and 3/4 of the people cannot even remove the firearm from the holster because of their baggy shirt.

They set up these revolvers and a moving crew to see what people would do. These people stare down the barrel to try to see if its loaded. One even tried to load and shoot it.

They ask this one boy who has one shot his friend when he was eleven. They said...what would you do if you were the president. He said, "I would make everyone luck up their guns. Make sure they have a lock." The reporter says, "Make them lock everyones guns up? Yeah" HAHAHAHA! The kid said lock all the guns up and make sure everyone has a lock not take everyones guns away and lock them up :P

I know allot of people are going to bust my balls about this...But I really like the fact that NJ makes you apply for a FID card if you want to buy firearms. I dont like the ammunition laws or some of the other laws but I really like the FID idea. Where they check for mentall illness etc...

There is a man at a gun show who is give 5,000 he is going to see how much he can buy in one hour. He bought allot of guns.

Ok shows over.......Not a terrible terrible show. Had some valid points but just like any show on firearms there are way too many instances to consider and argue. I myself would argue...why did the police officer shoot the person with the firearm immediately after the teacher...and not any of the other 50 students :P but anyways....Allot of people in this country need to WISE UP! Lock up those guns and keep em away from the kids!

Stay safe.

-Dave

Of course it was an anti show on the ALL BARACK CHANNEL. Totally done to show the side they wanted to show instead of being unbiased. Did you expect anything else?

Well, I've just watched 45 minutes of the show and no mention at all of how guns have been used to save lives. All negative press, the whole slanted report. One of many flaws I saw in the fake classroom senario is that they place the armed student in the middle of the front row which the shooter barging into the classroom goes for first. Obviously they knew where the armed student was. The element of suprise is in favor of the bad guy. There were a few good points made such as I agree about keeping firearms locked up away from children.

As much as it sucks I kinda really like the idea of a firearms purchaser ID card. I dont like a bunch of unqualified people being able to purchase firearms. Thats just me.

It was, and this is no surprise, overtly anti-gun. The overall message? Unless you're "highly trained" you should not have a gun for self defense. And even the "expertly trained" paper punching, college students fumbled when the poo hit the fan with their scenarios. You should, in fact, just run. Like the wind. Perhaps TFL should start a treadmill forum?

I think that sums things up quite nicely.

Here is the feedback page for ABC/ 20-20. I left them a comment at how onesided their ridiculous show was. Feel free to do the same.

Just as I expected. When I first heard the show was going to be on I had the slightest glimmer of hope it might not be totally anti. Man, was I WRONG!

One of the first things i noticed was the targeting of the concealed weapon carrier immediately after the instructor was downed. That could happen, and that would suck for everyone in the room. But, I think they coulda made it a bit more realistic and not let the "bad" gunman know exactly where the armed student is.

I believe my blood pressure was up about 40 points by the end of the show.
Suppose mainstream media is a lost cause for fairness on this subject.
