Open 40
I am setting up a 40 cal (Para) for a race gun. My question is "what are good loads for a 40 that will operate the compensator properly". I have been casting 155 gr swc. I have tried Power pistol at 6.7 gr with an OAL of 1.155". Not very pleased with it. Doesn't want to stay on target for the next shot very well. Any recommendations?

Welcome to TFL
Try AA#5 it is my go to powder for Large and Medium size Autos. I am not a big 40 cal guy but I know what you are going through. I had the same problems with a 38 Super. Also try a change in Primers. What are you using now? It is said that primers are not a big deal in pistols but sometimes they make a big Difference!
VV powders are really good but a little spendy and AA powders are on the cheap side. N330 is a very good powder and I have a fellow IPSC shooter that uses it(ON my Dillon) The only good thing is I beat his butt with my Super. Here are some loads for the 40: http://www.handloads.org/loaddata/de...Powder&Source= Treat them as if they came from an unknown source, which they have and start low but you will see a bunch of AA and VV loads for the Midweights

You need more powder to make the compensator work like it was meant too. I would look at a 165-180gr bullet going 1000+ fps and work back. I would load it as hot as could to get the compensator working for you and then slow down gradually. The more muzzle blast/Gas coming out of the barrel the better the compensator is going to work. Thats my guess, I don't shoot a compensated gun though. I do shoot IPSC and I will ask some of my buddies that shoot 40 what they do. It will be tomorrow though.................Sam

40 open class
Thank you very much. I would be really interested in finding out what other 40 cal open class shooters are using.
