Best 308 cal military style rifle.

The title says it all.

If you were going to buy a detachable mag, semi auto rifle in 308 caliber, which one would it be?

The FAL, M-14 and HK-91 are all excellent rifles. Here's a link to an article which details them and a couple other .308 MBRs:

M21

This was my issued M21 in sniper school. You could pop E Sil. at 900 meters all day. And at 600 using the starlight scope all night long. The ranging of the ART was first class.

M1a or AR10. AR10 will be more accurate.

M1A/M14
FAL
Hk 91
Stoner SR-25

Top choice would probably be the HK, followed by the Stoner, but would love them all

SCAR-H -- may as well step out of the usual M14/FAL/G3 rut.

Anyway, what do you want a the .308 rifle to do? Long range? General purpose? Close quarters work? Slow aimed fire from the bench? Hunting? Shooting three gun matches?

The best .308 rifle that fits your description is the SIG AMT.

I love my M1A, and would like another, but I'm told the AR-10s and clones bust them up on accuracy. AR-10(T) or SASS both seem more available and less expensive than M14 clones right now just by eyeing Gunbroker, too. Might be the most bang for your buck if you want tack-driving capabilities. That said, my SOCOM-16 will shoot around MOA at 100 with good ammo, so unless you're really shooting for superb accuracy the value is dubious.

I don't know about the "best" (and I don't think anyone can authoritatively make the claim anyway), but I'm really pleased with my DPMS LR-308. I would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a .308 rifle in an AR platform.

I'd sure like to see the high power scores that bear that out. In Gas guns the M14/M1A held that title until ARs in 223, started taking over.

If the AR10 was more accurate Why dont you see them in High Power Matchs.

I'm not just talking about Service Rifle, but even in the match rifle catagory you don't see them.

What you do see, is ARs in 223, M1As and M1,s the latter because of the CMP Sales programs. The former because they are more accurate.

If you like the AR10 fine, I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with the blanket statement they are more accurate then the M1A without the evidence to back it up.

Again, "I'm told." You failed to appreciate the context; people I know to be target-shooters have said that to me. I am not an expert.

That said, you're correct in that it was a generalized statement. I'm aware there are exceptions. You could probably get a 1903 to outshoot anyone at your club if you're willing to put enough money into it. However, in terms of economy, it's not going to be your best bet. That is my understanding of the M14s/M1As as well. If you want to get a National Match, custom job, M21/M25, of course they will hold better than the shooter. But you're at least doubling down on the base cost to do so.

I really, really want another M14/clone. I absolutely love them. But I've been asking around about the most economic means of pursuing a long-range, semiautomatic .30-cal, and the input I'm getting weighs more for the AR-10. No data points, no won matches, no bluebook citations - just what the tea leaves hold in my small circle. I was just contributing my perception based on the fact that the OP seems to be weighing my same question.

Enfield No4 rechambered in .308.

Highly accurate and very reliable system which is just a tad slower to shoot than a semi auto rifle in the same caliber in amied fire mode.

20rnds per Minute isnt bad!

Well I am just oldschool I guess.
