Glock 21 vs. 21sf

Do these use the same or different magazines?

The 21 will accept any magazine, new or old. If I understand correctly the 21FS with ambi-mag release will only work with the new magazines.

Different mags due to the ambidextrous feature. The SF is easier to handle safely, for me (average size hands).

I think JMR40 is correct. The G21SF with the ambi release will only accept the new mags.

So...looking @ mags online, I only find ones for the G21 (at least that's what they say, the ones that are even in stock)

Is a G21SF mag gonna say it's for the SF?

If not, is there some other specification in the listing/name that would assure me it's useable in the SF?

Thanks mens.

you can use the old mags if you have some. Its a simple modification to cut the notch on the mag with a razor knife.

If you find one of the SF models with the single-side mag release, it will use both. That may be something to consider if a new AWB with a standard-cap mag ban goes into effect. Plenty of G21 mags lying around, not so many 21SF mags.

After purchasing my SF I had the same question. Went to a shop that had mags for the 21 but not the 21SF. Pulled the mag out and it worked fine in my pistol. Bought it and have not had a problem since. I say, just try it.

Yes, and neither the magazines that came with the pistol or the one from the shop were marked for SF.

1407-First attachment shows mag release at rest
1408-Second attachment shows right mag release engaged
1409-Third attachment shows left mag release engaged

There appears to be nothing protruding from one side or the other since the magazine release is in the midde.

I see no reason a magazine should be altered for the ambidextrious magazine release. I could be wrong. I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again. My magazines have no markings for SF.

Does anyone have a regular 21 they could snap a comparison shot of???

Also, I reduced the image size. Larger pics are available.

dcobler,

Look at your magazines. If they have a notch all the way across the front of the magazine you have the newest generation of Glock magazines. They will work in old or new guns. All of my magazines only have a small notch molded into the right front corner of the magazine and will not work in the newer ambi release guns unless modified.

Glock is making all of their magazines this way now and have been doing so for at least a year, I think 2 years. They are doing this even on models that do not have ambi mag releases.

I do not think they mark any magazine "SF" because any new G-21 mag will work in either gun. The only problem you would have is trying to use older magazines in a gun with an ambi mag release.

This makes no sense. Care to elaborate?

If you have the newer gun you can only use new mags made in the last year or 2. With the older guns you can use the new magazines as well as any magazine ever made for that gun.

In the event of possible future hi-cap mag bans it will be harder to get the newer hi-cap mags whereas there are plenty of the older mags that are useable.

This was an issue during the '94 ban. Glock 9mm mags were plentiful and much cheaper than 10mm or 45 mags which only came out a year or 2 before the ban.

Or you can do like I did and get the G21SF with the universal rail and single-side magazine release. That way you have the improved ergonomics of the G21SF along with magazine and holster compatibility with the G21.
