Will a .223 barrel in 1:7" twist work with 55gr bullets?

I'm building a new AR and I will be buying a LaRue complete upper. Their barrels are 1:7" twist. I will mainly be using this rifle for long range shooting with heavy bullets, but I would still like to use it for close range shooting/plinking/blasting using my mass produced handloads with 55gr FMJ bullets. Is the 1:7 twist too fast for 55gr bullets?

It will work. I qualified a couple times with 55 grain ammo in an m16A2 during the Clinton years. Shot out to 300 meters without any problems.

I use a White Oak with a 1-7 barrel for high power, using 77 & 80 grn bullets. I do a lot of practice using 100 yard reduced targets and 55 grn bullets. They do allright.

Certainly works out better then shooting 80s in a 1-12 twist.

55gr works best when shot from a 1:12 twist barrel.

The 55's will shoot fine in a 7 twist. I've used 55's in my 7 twist for practice. I've won 100 yard High Power matches shooting 53 gr. SMK's out of a worn 6 1/2 twist barrel. A friend of mine shoots 52 gr match bullets out of his 7 twist at the same 100 yard matches without trouble.

I agree.... they'll work fine out to 100 yards... but the

brand and type of bullet might be just as important as the weight.... I presume you are looking for some 55gr bulk ammo for practice and fun... I'd just use plain old fmj stuff.... for reaching out and touching those targets further way... Black Hills is probably the best even though Ultra max is the one that my M4 really likes. keep in mind hollow point in .223 is not really for a better wound but to balance the bullet out better.
