Borescopes

What do people use for borescopes? I see the Hawkeye advertised all over, but it is expensive. THere are alot of cheaper boroscopes on eBay, but these seem to be designed for auto technicians and not gunsmiths. Has anyone found an inexpensive way to examine bores?

To get a true view, you have to be able to see the bore surface perpendicular to the bore, in other words, you need to be looking straight and square to the surface. It's called "direction of view" and is described in the link provided.

That's where most all the automotive type bore scopes fail for rifle barrel use... they look straight ahead, parallel to the scopes shaft or wand. Sure, you can see stuff, and maybe for what ever your needs are, that's all you need to make what ever decision you need to make.

You can actually rent bore scopes... from Atlas Inspection Technologies. The also sell used and refurbished scopes and make a swing prism bore scope... which is very cool.

Forgot to mention... Atlas isn't the only company that rents bore scopes. If you type "borescope rental" into a search engine, you'll get lots of hits.

Sir;
Borescopes are nice, yes; if tou want to see how utterly terrible your rifling looks in your "tackdriver" rifle.

Yep... a bore scope can make you crazy.

Even a high dollar benchrest barrel can have microscopic inclusions in them.
That's why most all custom barrel makers like Shilen, Hart, Lilja, PacNor, H&S Krieger and the rest have high quality bore scopes.
They really can't allow a barrel intended for competition to leave their shop with flaws, 'cause they know most serious competitors have bore scopes too and will be closely inspecting their new barrels.

It's kinda good really... the availability of quality bore scopes have up'd the barrel makers game to a new level.
