Handloading the 8x57 mauser

I have been loading 200gr sierra match kings for my target loads with good results, but I would like to load 195gr Hornady soft points for deer and hogs. I cant find any data for loading this lighter bullet. Is it acceptable to load these using the 200gr data? And also, I have found alot of differences in loads from one book compared to another so this makes the load decision more difficult. I currently have Win 760, H4350, and Reloader22 on hand but have only used H4350 for my 8mm loads. any good advice out there?

Yes. The Hornady bullet will work just fine with your current reloading data.

Take a look here:

Assuming you don't load to a radically different COAL (thus altering the internal capacity of the case where the charge burns) you can always safely substitute data for a similar but heavier bullet when loading a lighter one.

The opposite is not true of course. Pressure goes UP when the bullet weight gets heavier.

Your 200 grain data should be safe for loading your 195 grain bullets.
It may not return the most accurate load-- that's something you'll have to work toward.

So you can't find loading data for the 8x57. He He.

Try finding loads for the 8X51. I'm restoring a Mannlicher-Schoenauer that was originaly chambered for the 8X51. The only mention I've found for this round in in Phil Sharps reloading manuel, to quote Col Sharp, 'IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE, YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN.

Another problem is the barrel, the 8x51 is .318, not the normal .323 of most mausers. .318 bullets arn't real common either.

Go to Hodgdon's site for the Winchester, IMR and Hodgdon powders. http://www.hodgdon.com W760 is not listed, but W748 is. W760 may be a little slow. H4350 should be good for the 195gr Hornady and 200gr SMK.

Go to Alliant's site for RE 22. RE15 may be a better match. They are also marketing the RE17 for replacement of IMR 4350 very heavily. My older Nosler book likes Alliant and IMR powders, but are more stout than Alliant's data. http://www.alliantpowder.com

I am using Varget for 125gr (Hornady) to 150gr(Sierra Pro Hunter) bullets for the 49k CUP pressure CIP loads. If you are loading to SAAMI specs, you have to reduce your loads. Lots of load data is setup for the SAAMI spec for 8x57. I am using IMR 4350 for the 200gr SMK's and Accubonds based on Nosler data. http://www.nosler.com

I made a page on my website for the 8x57JS. http://www.geocities.com/jbinnig/ and click on 8x57JS.

Reloader's Journal has article on WWII guns and used Varget and the 195gr bullets.

That's funny. I had absolutely no problem finding a whole page of loading data for the Hornady 195 gr 8mm bullet. I opened the Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading, and there it was! Try looking in a reloading manual!

Get your hands on a Hornady manual!!

"Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading, Seventh Edition" page 555:
8x57 Mauser, 195 grain SP, .323"

None of your powders are listed, but the data is readilly available.

Heh... Scorch beat me by 10 seconds.
