12 ga. Low recoil shells
I am looking for some low recoil 12 ga self defense shotgun shells for a Mossberg 500. Since it will be defending in close quarters (< 40 feet) I am looking for accuracy and quick followup rather than maximum stopping power.
Probably want #4 Buckshot, but open to all suggestions. |

There's lots of opinions on this...and many will disagree with me, but depending on your living arrangements, over-penetration is something you may need to consider. Friendly fire is not good. At your average HD confrontation distance, even a #4 or #6 game load will knock any man down, and you'll run much less risk of hitting a family member/neighbor on the other side of a wall. Buckshot is nice, but you only need to kill the guy once.

Federal tactical 2 3/4" 00 buck with flite control wad. I believe they make it in a low recoil round. I have the normal ones and they are comfortable to shoot, and pattern very well out of my 870 even with a cylinder bore choke.. about 12"-15" pattern at 25 yards.

You have a couple of options with Federal® Ammunition. First, and this is what my Dept uses, is their Power Shok™ Low Recoil load; #H132. This is a 00 Buck 9 pellet load @ 1140fps. Their other load is the Premium™ Vital Shok™ w/the Flite Control™ wad, Copper plated pellets (#PFC154). This is also a 00 Buck 9 pellet load @ 1145fps. Remington® offers a Low Recoil load of 8 pellets of 00 Buck @ 1200fps #RL12BK00. Lastly Winchester® has a Low Recoil load called Win Lite™, 9 pellets of 00 Buck @ 1125fps. Any one of these loads will do the job you need for personal & home defense.

Forget the #4 and #6 dove loads, unless you have a problem with dove burglars in your next of the woods.
My agency uses reduced recoil OO buck, of varying flavors. I'm not aware of any #4 buck reduced recoil. That would be nice. |

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=368798 I just bought 2 boxes of their #4 and 00 buck (12 pellet/1290fps) to pattern in my maverick 88. I am currently using (and very happy with) fiocchi's low recoil 00 (9 pellets/1150fps) buck. I get a nice consistent 6" pattern at 12 yards with it. |
