savage arms springfield model 187J

I've had this gun since I was 8 it belonged to my great grandpa then my grandpa then my dad then my uncle now me and I would like to keep it in the family, but I cant find the serial number on it anywhere and I've been told that if it don't have a serial number than it is considered and illegal weapon? Can anyone help me on this and point me towards where the serial number is? Many thanks for everything in advance.

Most guns from that era did not have serial numbers, often didn't even had a makers name. Because of it's age it should not be a problem it is an antique.
