I've seen this covered by several others before me but with General down and you guys considering various options, I figured that this might be a good time to bring this up again and sort of remind you of it ... Why can't we change our e-mail and still remain the same user? Shouldn't everything be based on user-name/password and be independent of the e-mail address? I know that it currently isn't but shouldn't it be? Can we somehow make it so?

FUD-
You're mistaken. You can change your email addy in the profile section any time.

You can't change your User Id. But this is not up to me...we only lease the software.

It says that a new password will be generated and sent to the new e-mail address. But will everything else remain the same ... such as the number of posts, etc.?

Yup - I've done that a couple of times...
It always works for me.
