any advantage to the new Honadys Lever gun ammo in a handgun ???

so your guys thoughts to the new pointy plastic tipped bullets in 44 mag in a revolver, or the 30-30 or 45-70 ammo in a Contender ???

... other than for longer range use??? I regularly deer hunt with a 14" hunter Contender in 45-70, & my longest shot I'd take is likely around 75 yards... sure hand loads would be best, but curious of anyone who has used them, i there is "really" any advantage over a hollow point or flat point out of a similar gun in under 100 yards ???

Spitballing a guess here, but I'd guess it would be worse.

Hornady probably designed those bullets for a rifle's barrel length and appropriate velocity.

Run the bullets out of a handgun and you get less velocity, meaning that the bullet will not hit the target at the speed it was designed. It won't open up or mushroom as well as if it were fired from a long barrel.

That's my guess, but I don't have a chrony, box of ammo, 30-30 contender, Win94 and side of beef to use to prove it.

I'm thinking the same thing but have absolutely nothing to support it.

The handgun velocities that Hornady lists aren't bad. According to them, the tip is supposed to be pushed back into the bullet on impact forcing it to expand (similar to Cor-Bon's Pow'RBall) so velocities plays a smaller role in expansion.

Hornady suggests that they are dual use, for guns short and long. Interesting. Those are hefty loads from a handgun.

and for rifle applications they work VERY VERY well. I couldn't even guess at handgun applications.
