Is preseason work hunting?
I just got thinkin'... I am trying to get an idea of game animals and wildlife around this house we moved into. Just to see what is around mostly. Than there is the time spent scouting hog sign and deer activity. Why do we call that scouting and not hunting? The only difference is we don't kill game while scouting preseason... I actually hunt harder preseason. When season arrives, if I did my job right preseason I am just going out to kill the game I scouted and hunted for months in the summer and fall.

Without getting too carried away about word meanings, I guess that "scouting" is just hunting without any intention of shooting. You can scout with or without a gun; with a gun, you can shoot or not shoot.
I don't worry about it. I figure I'm hunting, even just driving along a highway. If somebody wants to call it "searching" or "scouting" or whatever, I don't care.

Cool,
I am more of a scout, as I don't shoot much anymore. Yesterday I carried a bundle of shingles in my frame pack in our 10K Run/Walk event held every Independence day. Its a way of conditioning for the upcoming hunting season. I wasn't as prepared this year. I have a couple of large blisters on my feet, and had a couple of friends remind me that it can't be worth the effort as I never shoot anything anyway! Now I can put them in there place with the statement "A good scout doesn't shoot".
