No lock, no MIM, no pinned & recessed, no double action...

...only two sideplate screws.

Picked up a new toy at the Fun Show this weekend.

My very first single-action Smith, a 4" .38 Single Action 2nd Model, circa 1881.

Nickel, matching numbers, "block-letter" grips are perfect and numbered to the gun, bore is nice, timing is good and lockup is tight, finish is about 85%-90%.

Pics to follow tomorrow...

Yes Ma'am- please do. Yours has the spur trigger if I'm not mistaken?

I am weak, very weak for those old top-breaks. A pristine, four-inch Double Action Frontier Model with offer itself up to me one day and then all of my internal organs, except those necessary for minimal life support, will be for sale. If I am still able, I'll have somebody wheel me out to a Dept. qualification with it. I think HKS-25 speedloaders just might work with 44 WCF rims

Like the photo. The lighting and book create a nice ambiance representing the time period.

What's neat is that Twain's A Tramp Abroad was published one year before that revolver was made.

I bought it 'cause it matched the cartridges.

Haven't you been warned about those trigger-less guns? They just GO OFF by themselves.

Color me jealous! That's one nice looking 127 year old gun! Good catch!

I'm still looking out for a nice Regulation Police .38 to add to my collection and here you are, tempting me to get into the expensive part of collecting!

How bad are Regulation Polices out in CA? Around here you can get a scuffed-but-shootable prewar I-frame for $175-$250 without too much searching.

Okay. I am OFFICIALLY envious. I've got an old Webley Mk III (really nice gun- the British counterpart to the Colt SAA), but it's nothing like that. You got yourself a wonderful piece of history.
As for me, I'm still looking for a LeMat, like the one carried by Doc Holliday. Anyone know where I can get one without having to rob a museum?

Tamara,
In the last 15 years, I've seen precisely 2 specimens for sale of the Regulation Police .38 S&W in California. One was in excellent condition if you wanted to pay $395 (in 2002) and the other was probably someone's nightstand gun based on the scratches for a mere $300. And both of these were later J-frame Model 33's.

Heck, a local shop wants $299 for a S&W M&P built between '45 and '48 ("S" prefix) with only about 70% finish left and three chambers falling out of time. By the time you add the mandated "registration" fee and sales tax, it's a $360 beater.

Nice find.

I like the idea of a topbreak revolver. Why did that design go out of fashion?

I like them too. My opinion is that lots of folks wanted a mastodon killer they could tote on their belt, and the swing-out DA's & thumb-busters simply adapted to the hotter cartridges better.

The only genuine cowboy I knew as a kid (admittedly several decades ago) carried an old bird's-head Webley that had been recut for .45 ACP decades earlier. It was an absolute hoot to shoot and pretty accurate with the lead-bullet reloads he ran in it. A modern version with moonclips would be about all the wheelgun most of us will ever need.
