Tom - ya gotta give us something to work with. It's OK to replace the last couple digits with "x"s, but we need the first part of the SN to find a year for you. Also, 64-2s were made from 1977 to 1988, and the SN will either have a letter "D" in there preceded by one or two numerical digits, or will be of the "modern" type that starts with three letters, followed by 4 digits. No 64s were made with 5-digit (only) SNs. Take the SN from the bottom of the grip frame - other numbers that may be stamped in the frame cutout are not necessarily serial numbers

Serial number data in the SCSW for later model S&W auto pistols is very incomplete. Pretty much nothing on the 1911's. Best I can tell you is the 4506 is between 94 and 99.
If you call S&W customer service they will give you the DOB for both guns over the phone for free.

Tom - that would make it 1983.

SCSW doesn't appear to list any SNs starting with "3D" - 1D, 2D, and 4D up to 30D, (and even D3), but no 3D. And there's no gap in the sequence of years listed where "3D" would fit, i.e., the list goes right from 2D99999 (end of 1978) to 4D00001 (start of '79). Mod. 10-8 was introduced in 1977 and replaced by the 10-10 in 1988, if that helps.
FlyFish, While 3D doesn't appear in the manual, the S&W historian said that 3D was just a continuation of 2D. So in 1978 they had a very large production year.

S&W 39-2

I friend of the family is in ill health and may sell of his guns.

He has a S&W 39-2 serial A6372xx.
I only examined it quickly but think it is the alloy frame model. I didn't know what he had or that this model was both alloy & steel versions until I got back home.

Looking for info & it's year?

Thanks,
Bill

Serial numbers ran from 295000 in 1962 to 786544 in 1969. Your SN of 3674XX is likely 63/64.

Need to know caliber and is it a double or single action. Trigger guard or no trigger guard. Hammer or hammerless.

Yes, it's a Chiefs Special (pre model 36) made in 1952.

1980.
It would be an alloy frame with steel slide. The all steel versions numbered less than a thousand, were 39 no dashes and fell in a narrow serial number range.
39's are excellent and very reliable guns.

And with a serial number of 58530 it would be a .38 Double Action 2nd Model.
Serial numbers ran from 4001 in 1880 to 119000 in 1884.

Actually, the .32 break tops were made up till 1937 and the .38's till 1940.

S&W 38 special ctg question, please help

Hello. I am new to the forum. Recently inherited a gun from my grandfather who passed. Would like a little info on it if possible.

It is marked

MARCAS REGISTRADAS ... it isn't a shiny material, wood butt.

Smith and Wesson stamp on the side and all over it.

It is a 6 shooter ... cylinder pops out on the side.

Serial number is - 986XX - 5 digits. It also has a C to the left.

Inside the cylinder where it closes it looks to have a k and a 1299 randomly positioned

When do you all think it was made, what might the approximate value be not that I am going to sell it? Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951.
Value depends on condition. Roughly $250 well used to ~$500 like new.

Serial numbers ran from AHC1687 in Jan. 1986 to AVB in July 1987.
So ALW is likely 1986, maybe 87.

Heirloom 38 S & W 2" Nickel plated revolver

Hi folks,

If I may pick the brains of the Smith & Wesson folks here, I just inherited my first Smith which belonged to my Grandfather. The left side of the 2" barrel is engraved with "Smith & Wesson" and under that has 38 S & W.SPC.CTG On the right side of the frame, below the cylinder is has " Made in U.S.A."

The serial number is 608XXX whis is stamped on the butt strap and also on the end of the cylinder. 24929 is stamped in the inside of the crane. It has the S & W engraved trademark on the frame and on the gutta percha grips. I've attached a couple of photos.. Thanks for any help you can render, it is much appreciated.

UPDATE:

I got a bit impatient and called S & W to see if I could pinpoint a range of years and learned a few things. Any S & W with an "alpha" character in the serial number is post WW II as they becan putting a "V" in the number during that time and kept it going afterward with other alpha characters. The Historian said that my revolver might date from the early 1930's, but that snub nose configurations were rare then ie special order. So the estimate for mine is 1935 plus or minus a few years. I'll probably go ahead and order the "historical letter" to keep with the gun.

Help me date a model 36

I just got a model 36 with serial number 551721. The factory tells me it is a 1960-61 manufacture. But some of the stuff I am reading here says that can't be. Does anyone know what year of model 36 I have.
