Water Denim Test CCI .22 LR 5 Inch Barrel
Hello,
I told a friend that I would post this for her on several gunboards which I visit regularly. She is new to shooting and this was her first ammunition test. I'll show her any replies. *********************************************** I wanted to do a test with a .22 LR 5 Inch barrel. I wanted to compare the difference between water jugs and denim covered water jugs. Handgun was an H&R revolver. http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/Aprilmod.jpg Here i am holding the gun... http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/Dsc00043.jpg Here is the gun and a couple of bare water jugs... http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...t=e107b64e.flv Here is the shot on the bare water jugs. It went through and through. The expansion is unknown but is suspected due to the water splashing on me!!!! :gah: http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/Dsc00046.jpg Here is the 4- layer denim covered jug. http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/Dsc00056.jpg As you can see no expansion was evident... http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/Dsc00060.jpg ...But as you can it exited with enough force to flatten itself against a piece of metal. I'm new to all of this, so this was my first test. I enjoyed it and I hope you did as well!!!!!!!! ![]() April |

Thanks April ... it's good to see a new shooter with an interest in taking the time to learn about their firearm and what the bullet actually does once fired.
It's a great start and if more shooters did their own testing maybe we would have less caliber arguments on the forums . Naw ... that would take all the fun out of it.![]() Keep shooting and keep testing! |

To April,
Good report. We need more 22LR testing because it's such a controversial subject. Some people hate/deride it, others carry it as their CC or OC gun (I do). And as you know, due to the small caliber, PENETRATION is the info we need, also since hollowpoints can't be expected to expand because of lost velocity from short (handgun) barrels (22LR velocities/penetration are a whole 'nother story and are not applicable to those who use/carry handguns). Over at GoldenLoki's website (http://www.goldenloki.com/ammo/gel/22lr/gel22lr.htm) he's done some 22LR penetration testing in ballistic gelatin (and .32ACP, another criticized caliber -- but I also carry a .32 regardless)...very good information. But we need MORE people doing this kind of testing with assorted brands of 22LR ammo, assorted solid vs. hollowpoint ammo, and especially assorted "hard" targets to simulate CNS/head shots (skull penetration) in order to learn more about penetration capabilities of the 22LR bullet and the performance of the 22LR ammo available today for a short handgun barrel. And it would be good to see info re: 22LR velocities/penetration from your 5" barrel compared to something with a shorter barrel like a Beretta 21A, a derringer or even a shorter handgun such as a NAA Mini-Revolver. You've made a good start taking the time to do your testing and posting the results...maybe you could expand your tests. -- John D. |

Here's a stinger shot from a Beretta 21A. It went through one gallon jug of water and into a second where I recovered it from. It was fired from about 10 feet away and the jugs were bare.

I wouldn't have expected it to deform that much at all.
Now all you need is a chronograph to know its velocity out of the 21A barrel. -- John D. |
