For those who think mass killings require a gun...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18992200/

A man wielding a 21 inch long knife killed 10 and injured 14 in the Philippines. Never underestimate the deadliness of a knife, especially in skilled hands. Knives are silent, giving the attacker the element of surprise for other victims. Knives never run out of ammo. Knives are deadly in an arc rather than a single vector.

Had there been someone armed with a gun, this sicko would not have killed and injured nearly that many people.

There was an incident like that in Germany last year. That was at a train station. Hundreds of people and a lot of noise, so nobody paid attention or saw anything until it was too late. The poeple who were stabbed said that they initially didn't realize what happened. It felt like someone had pushed or punched you. Pretty scary if you think about it.

IIRC the biggest mass murder in CONUS was perpetrated with $.87 worth of gasoline (that's at older prices of course). The perp started a fire at the only entrance to a dance club and dozens died.

If you ever doubt the deadliness of a bladed weapon watch the police training video "Surviving edged weapons." Also check out Mike Inay's escrima training video. Up close a well wielded knife is frighteningly effective. I took escrima lessons for a few months and have no doubts that one could inflict serious harm, especially by surprise. A "sucker punch" with a sharp knife can make a wound that will be fatal in the time taken for exanguination. The police treat any stab wound like a murder investigation, because the victim can and often does die later.

Almost too funny!

A friend of mine was stationed in the Philippines for the USAF in the 60's-70's. He said that in certain parts of that country, it wasn't unusual for a 12 year old kid to be skilled enough with a razor sharp knife such that he could cut the buttons off your shirt without damaging the shirt itself.

What about the "lady" who ran her car at 70 MPH into a crowd of people a few days ago?

Right, mass killings don't require a gun. Bombs, fires, bringing down airplanes, etc. can all accomplish the same tasks, or driving your car through a crowd of people. Heck, even knives will work. It is a bit old school, 14th century old school, but works fine.

Sheeple tend to forget that the world's first known serial killer, Jack the Ripper, used a knife to kill 5 women in 1888 London. The Ripper caused so much public discomfort with his knife that it was followed all around the world in the newspapers.

I have seen physical proof in training that a man who is an experienced knife fighter, at 21 feet, can close the distance and kill you with 3 quick swipes, and stand back and watch you bleed out before your gun can clear its holster. And this was against some of the so called 'quick draw' guys.

back when Reagan was in office (think his 2nd term) an off-duty or fired cop or security gaurd got on a train in S. Korea with some sort of edged weapons. can't recall if swords, machetes (think it was) or hatchets (maybe also) or maybe a combo. he waited until the train was rolling at high speed and went on a rampage. if memory serves 30 some-odd died and 30 some-odd more badly injured before he started into another car where male passengers had seen what was going down were waiting for him. they beat and cut him to death.

I didn't think they would sell you a screwdriver in England because the English prefer Gin over Vodka,
I remember seeing a video of a convenience store in Japan being robbed by a man wielding a stick!

BillCA...

I hear in South America there are places where the street kids are known as "pirhana kids" because they are so skilled with blades that they can rush a person 4 or 5 at a time, cut their clothing to take wallets etc. and run off and split up.

Jack the Ripper was not a mass murderer, but a serial killer, and he wasn't the first and wasn't the first known. Dr. Harry Howard Holmes preceded Jack by several years, killed more people, of which aphixiation of one of his favored methods.

Gilles de Rais (a French nobleman, born in 1404) preceded both of those by over 400 years. No doubt there were others, but these are serial killers and not mass killers - serial being a series of murders over time involving multiple incidents, mass being multiple victims in a singular event, although the event may occur over a period of time (as with Cho's, Whitman's, etc. sprees) as a continuous event.

The first reported mass murder I can find in the US is Howard Unruh in 1949 who did go on a shooting spree, but he was apparently just one of the earlier known single mass muderers. You then also have mass murder events like St. Valentine's Day Massacre in 1929 that was a mass murder committed by several individuals.
