The best in my opinion would be a Glock 20 or 21SF or a Glock 23. As far as Cheap" Don't buy a piece of crap that might not work when called upon to protect you!!!!!!!

There are many options out there:

Bersa Thunder .380 at $225 is a good choice, . . . NIB

Springfield Armory has .45 models for less than $500, . . . NIB

Most large retailers have police trades for $400 and up, . . . 9mm, 40, etc.

These will all work, . . . and in my opinion are good choices. Just be sure to get something YOU can shoot.

May God bless,

Dwight

"Best and Cheapest" don't go well together....

How about, "What's a good reliable gun that is relatively inexpensive?"

Lots of good answers there. My answer: sw9ve. It's about $300 brand new.

Small frame , hammerless type .38 revolver. Like the Charter Arms or S&W j-frames.

Makarov offers a good balance of price.size, and reliability at the expense of some power. I would rather hit with a Makarov than leave my .44 Mag at home or still be saving for that Les Baer .45.

My thoughts exactly. If it's my butt on the line I want the best I can get. In my case, I've opted for a S&W M60. Small, powerful, reliable, but hardly cheap. If I ever need to use it on a BG, however, I have complete confidence that it will work.

I wouldn't go cheap for self defense but the cheaper guns I have are my Berettas, Glock, or my beloved Ruger DAO; I have two of those....

Don't best and cheapest just mean used name brand? Some of the best guns I have came from pawnshops.

There are lots of folks out there wanting to protect themselves by using a firearm, but some are just turned away due to the prices of quality guns. Just because someone is on a budget doesn't mean they can't buy an affordable firearm capable for the purpose of self defense. $250 bucks can buy you a used revolver that is still in great shape.

Try pawn shops and local gun shops, you'll find a nice used revolver or semi auto at a decent price.

A high quality polymer framed semiauto, like the S&W M&P, Glock, Beretta PX4...
Stoeger Cougar (Beretta Clone), Ruger SP101, something CZ (don't have experience in their line)...

These are not the absolute cheapest, but are certainly below average in price, and yet very good quality firearms.

Best and cheapest? You'll have to make a compromise if you want cheap.

If you are looking for a 9mm, I'd check out the Kel-Teck PF9. It's available for about $260-$285.

The PF9 has a long and heavy trigger pull (it is kind of a safety).

There are a lot of surplus CZ 82s on the market that would be a good choice.

Makarov. Preferably East German. Not a real good choice, but if you insist on cheap, it's the best cheap gun out there, and the 9X18 cartridge is as effective as a .380.

I certainly can't make your decisions for you, and I wouldn't even if I could. But in my value system, I consider my life, and the lives of my wife and son worth more than the $600-$750 it would cost you to get seomething like a SIG P239, SIG P229, or other top QUALITY defensive handgun.

I consider my life is also worth the $20+ per box I pay for premium 9MM ammunition for the little SIG P239.

Yes, . . . absolutely, . . . there is a lot to be said for purchasing a quality firearm, . . . good brand name, . . . good quality, . . . ad infinitim.

OTOH, . . . some folks just don't have the werewithall to do that.

I have a little Bersa .380 that has never had an incident in all the rounds I have put through it. It has something like a 4 1/2 in sight radius, . . . yet I was able to drop 15 rounds within a 7 1/2 in pattern just foolin around the other day. I had never shot it from back at 25 yds (75 feet) so I thought I would try it, . . . surprized me.

And that is with WW white box, . . . Wally World ammo.

May God bless,
Dwight

Used Police

Either a snub revolver or a used police sig 225 or other sig, which seems to be at Gander Mountain for one, a number of them. Police-used are often used infrequently though they have a lot of holster wear. But so what, it'll be concealed.

Bersas used to be a lot less expensive than they are now. Lots of folks love them. I wanted to love the one I had but every time I fired it, it spat burning gunpowder back onto my hand and arm. Not a great way to spend your day at the range.

Look for a good used revolver. There are a LOT of old police revolvers out there, and although you may need to do some shopping around, (and read the sticky on checking out revolvers over on the revolver forum). A J-frame, if it fits your hand, is just about the most concealable thing on earth. I have a S&W m37, from a run that they made for some foreign government that ended up not wanting them. That was their loss and my gain. I love that little gun. But a good Detective Special...any one of many models of .38 or .357 in a 3" barrel, is concealable and shouldn't set you back even as much as a new XD or Glock.

One thing: someone suggested a hammerless J-frame. I know all the talk about the hammer getting caught and cocking the revolver, and I'm sure it has happened to somebody. But that hammer means that you can shoot it SA, and unless you're one of those lucky souls that is just born good with DA, you might at some point like to have that option. Just a thought.

Happy shopping.

You could find a .25 Phoenix Raven for about $75.....I WOULDN"T TRUST MY LIFE WITH IT, but you can if cheap is really what you want.

http://www.vpc.org/studies/deadpho.htm

You could probably find a Ruger revolver or semi auto for a relatively low price, but it will still be in the 200+ (if it is a used gun) 300+ if a new

One of the less expensive Kahr's that has impressed me is the 9m/m CW-9.
A fine DAO handgun indeed; with the only drawback being the cost of the
extra magazines~!

But, then again in most instances I'm armed with some type of 1911 style\
.45 ACP~!
