Shotgun Bites Back!

I have a knoxx specops stock on my 870. I have a scope mounted on my Hastings fully rifled slug barrel as well. I was looking at it, and would the scope hit me in the eye with the recoil? I know the specops stock moves backward, but is it enough to hit me in the eye? Anyone have this happen? Your input would be great before my shotgun bites me! Thanks

Perhaps you didn't have a scope with a long enough eye-relief?

I haven't shot it yet, but it is about 3 inches from my eye. Is that too close, with the knoxx stock?

I have seen the vids too, VERY IMPRESSIVE! But it looks dangerously close to my eye, I guess no one has had this problem though?

I would not shoot 12ga with only 3" eye relief

Nor would I. That's askin for a smack. I get it once in a while from a couple of my guns, and I've got more relief than that. My buddy Tino has a scar on his eyebrow from a Simmons on a .270. Big ole slug gun will have more kick than his did.

I have never shot a shotgun with that type of stock, but have played around with them stocks a bit at a gun shop and it seems that they only go back a little over an inch at the most. Still though I would think you would need a little mor eye relief especially if you are shooting magnum slugs. Most magnum slug loads kick more than most high powered rifles. I made the mistake once by trying to aim a pistol grip shotgun with magnum loads when I was 13. Ended up with a broken nose and damaged ego.

So what should I do? I have the scope mounted, and I do not have more money to throw down at the moment. Should I put on the original stock? I just don't think that will help much. Your opinions will be greatly appreciated riight now, thank you so much!

why not just try it out? maybe put a strofoam cup taped over ur eye with the bottom cut out, place your eye much furter back... try it annd see ?

I have the pistol grip, folding Knoxx stock on my mossy 500 12ga and it only moves a little back (no where near 3 inches). Still I would try shooting it without your face on the stock (head up position) and watch for how far it goes back. My guess is that you should be ok, but it might be close. I personally like the bushnell holo sight or a good scout style scope for my shotguns. It gives a bit more of a field of view.

look good in a double-breasted suit, and some look stupid. I think the need for eye relief might just be one of those things. I need it. I get cracked in the face without it. Hell, I even get cracked WITH it when I shoot the big guns (.338 of any variety and up). I have friends who it just does not happen to. It might have to do with your size or how relaxed you are when you squeeze the trigger. I don't really know. You may have to find out the way the rest of us did. If you fire the gun, then wake up 10 minutes later with blood all over your shirt, you need more eye relief.

If your going to mount a scope on your SG. move it about 4" away.. but put a rubber eye enhancer on ... this will save you getting a black eye.

I'll fall in with the crowd and suggest a longer eye relief. I broke my nose once shooting my .50 cal muzzleloader b/c I mounted the scope just a wee bit too far back. Bridge of my nose and both eyes turned purple. Not a pretty sight.

Haha did the same thing on Cabelas .54 caliber muzzel loader and it broke my nose haha.

as long as the diameter is the same it doesnt matter if it fits one or another.

try ebay.. its a great place.. but most gun shops will sell them... they are used mainly for rifle scopes.. but you can get a long enough version to save your eye/ or nose.

We have found that generally 3 inches of eye relief is sufficient to avoid "scope eye." IF you don't get hit by the scope witih a regular stock, you won't with a COPStock or SpecOps as the overall movement is about the same. Some folks just climb up the receiver and get hit no matter what. Keep your head back and make sure that you can see the entire rear lens image.
