Dimes loaded in a shot shell?

I was talkin to this older gentleman, and he said he loads his (410 or 20 guage) with dimes!!!!! Its supposed to be his home defense load? Said he had $2.70 in each shell. Is this plausable? Anybody else do this or hear of it, or Is my leg getting pulled?

Not true. Been there, tried that. It's very ineffective, even at very close range. Stick with 00-Buck.

The dimes do not penetrate and fly all over the place. Might make a very interesting contact wound, though.

It was a real neat scene in Peckinpah's Billy the Kid though. "16 thin dimes"

In 'Young Guns' Emilio Estavez playing Billy the Kids says, 'Best damn $1.80 I ever spent' after killing a guy guarding him in jail with a shot shell full of dimes.

It would not be possible to load a 20 guage or a 410 with dimes. I don't have the measurements on hand but as I recall a dime measured something like .720 +/-.. Much too big to fit through the bore of anything smaller than a 12 guage, much less a 20 or 410.

heheh... i've heard of it but never actually seen it....... i do make what i call a multiball load for my 6" model 27 shotgun though... it consists of 2 .32 cal round balls in a .357 magnum case over a plastic wad and around 3.5 grs of bullseye with another plastic wad crimped over it to hold it in... very interesting groups at 10' indeed........................................................

Mythbusters tried it, and the stuff bounced off a side of pork wearing a shirt. Buckshot ripped through and through.
