30-06 reloads

I have been having some trouble getting my mauser 30-06 (18 inch barrel)to get tight groups, currently i was loading up some sierra 168 gr btsp match bullets with a wide arrange of charges of imr4064. Now i was thinking about using 180gr hornady spitzers with charges of imr4831. my hornady manual says that powder is very good with a 30-06 that has a 22 inch barrel. but my concern is does the shortness of my barrel have any effect on the burning of that particular powder. and is there a powder made for short barrels or am i just thinking too much on this one?

I'd stick with fairly fast rifle powders in the range of 4064, not because of accuracy or velocity, but because of muzzle flash. At dawn or dusk, the flash from a .30-06 charge of 4831 in an 18" barrel is going to be horrendous.

If you are not getting reasonable accuracy, say under 2 MOA, you are more likely to have rifle problems than load problems. Crown is the first place to check and bedding the second.

I agree with DJ that its worth checking the crown and barrel channel to make sure the stock is not putting pressure on the barrel. That being said I have had guns that would not shoot certain types or weights of bullets at all, while another weight would group fine.

If it wont shoot the boattails well try a flat base bullet, if it won't shoot the 165's well, try a 150. My own 30-06 will absolutely not shoot anything over 165 grains worth a darn, factory or handloaded. It will group 150-165gr range well though.
