Magazine Capacity in NJ

So I'm at the range last night with my new XD .45 ACP.

This guy comes in and has a panic attack because he sees the "High Capacity" magazine sticker on the case (XD ACP mags are 13 rds).

This guy goes on to say that I'm a felon because I have more than 10 rd mags...

I try to explain to him that the state limit is 15 rds. He says 10...

I've checked the state firearms laws about 40 times online and always seen 15 rd limits so I'm pretty sure I'm safe.

Only reason why I'm posting this is to get rid of that nagging voice in the back of my head.

Please tell me I'm not going nuts and that the NJ state limit is 15...

According to my NJ state trooper cousin, legal limit is 15 round mags.

I just bought the same gun....The reputable dealer I purchased it from WOULD not supply illegal magazines.

The nj law states 15rds max.

Exactly, 15 round limit. I bought mine (tactical model) up at Ramsey 2 months ago.

It's a great gun, I have 350 rounds through it so far, flawless functioning and far more accurate than I am.

Got my CZ with aftermarket 15s because the 16s were one too many rds for NJ. Tell this doofus to go panic elsewhere.

P.S.

Where were you shooting?

Having just come back from a trip that included Lakewood, NJ. I must say you guys have a beautifull state. Now, DO SOMETHING about those stupid gun laws.

I planned to Purchase a CZ SP01 Shadow direct from Angus Hobdell, but none of the FFL's in the state would touch it as they didn't want to deal with the hassle of accidentally being sent a 20 round magazine...

Just tell him you don't care because you are already a felon for buying your high blood pressure meds from Canada.

Tell him he should not own any firearms until he knows the laws. Up to 15rds are legal in New Jersey. Rifle or pistol, it doesn't matter.

What means "max - 15 rounds"?

If the mag has 15 rounds, isn't this 15 + 1 (in the barrel). Some gun vendors even have ads like "10 + 1", etc. I'm from NJ, too.

the max is not what the weapon can handle, but what the magazine will handle. The restriction is on magazine capacity. One in the chamber is not in the mag

Ahh, farther than the range I go to. Wish there were more public ranges by me.

Did that recently change? I was pretty sure it was 10.

I posted the answer in the Legal section. Packing.org answers this with links to the state statues.

abs, the one in the chamber does not count. The capacity of the magazine is what counts - and that limit is 15.

The 10 round limit is from the gone but not forgotten Assualt weapons law that CLINTON was famous for signing in 1994. In 2004 the law was withdrawn there is no federal limit on ammunition feeding devices anymore. New Jersey around the same time (1994) passed legislation that magazine capacity be limited to 15 rounds. SO anything 15 rounds and under is legal in New Jersey...
Just thought I would add my 2 Cents.

I got a great deal on some 17rd Beretta 92FS mags from a poor NJ resident that wasn't allowed to own them anymore. No restriction on this side of the river...(sorry I had to say it)
