Target Load

I bought a used smith&wesson 57 .41 mag yesterday. What's a good reload for target practice?

7.5 to 8.0 grains of Unique under a 210 to 220 grain SWC. That's still a substantial load, but the .41 mag does not do well with more reduced loads, ime. Verify me with a reliable loading manual, but that's well under max.

If you want to shoot light loads in it, you should have bought a 610, and just loaded it with .40 s&w.
It sounds like you bought too much gun, you can send it to me if this proves to be true, I load mine with XTP 210 grain bullets, CCI magnum primers, and enough 2400 powder to make it look like a fireworks show in the middle of the day. H110 works well, too.
They never made a .41 special, and I haven't seen anyone shoot the light .41 mag loads with the same accuracy as the H110 or 2400 loads, don't know why.
There are certainly gunsmiths that are more than willing to take your life savings and make a .41 special just for you, but it really isn't very cost efficient.
.41 mag is my favorie wheelgun caliber of all time, and it sounds like you got a good one.

.41 Magnum Target Loads

The first thing you need to do is to use your "Search Engine" and type in
.41 Special. That will give you a wealth of information.
My target loads are:
8.0 grains of Unique [Duplicates the Old Police Load.]
5.0 grains of Unique [My PPC load.]
