748 for the .308 NATO good choice?

I was drawn between IMR-3031 or Winchester 748. Any opinions?

I prefer the 748 simply because it meters better, not to mention that I happen to get better results with it (with 150, 165, & 180 grainers). What grain of bullet are you using?

I'm still working up loads for my M1-A. I still have not shot any loads yet.....very soon!
I'm trying out 147 FMC, 165 Nosler BT and Seirra 168 Matchkings. Do you have any preferences. Thanks...Steve

I used 45.5 grains of WW-748 with the Sierra 168 grain Matchkings and WLR primers to duplicate the Federal Match ammo specs in our SWAT sniper guns. These were put up in Federal cases, and shot as well as the factory stuff, which sometimes did 1/4" to 3/8" 5-shot groups @ 100 yards. Good stuff!

Remington's target load, that they used with their 40x rifles was, as I recall, 37 grains of 3031 with a 168 grain bullet, they did not say whose. Factory target showed 3-5 shot groups that averaged .43", indoord at 100 yards. I used this load with Hornady 168 grain Match bullets at 600 yards, and was quite surprised. The load shot very well, and there was almost no discernable recoil.

You might also try WC 846 with 168 or 173 grain FA match bullets, if you can find any. I used 41- 42 grain charges in bolt rifles, for 200 and 300 yard stages of NMC course. 748 should work well enough, however I have never used any of it.

I use both 748 and 4895 to reload .308 and 30-06, both with good results. Mikey

748 is absotively fantabulous for the .308 & 7.62 NATO loadings. Using Lake City brass (heavier & less internal capacity than Fed., =higher pressures), I use 43.5 and get sub-inch groups!

According to an article, a while back, in one of the gun magazines, the representatives of the various suppliers were asked which of their companies powders was best for the .308 Win./7.62 NATO. I don't remember IMR's response, but Winchester's was an emphatic W-748. He said it was THE powder designed for the .308. I haven't tried it, having pet loads using
W-760, but I just got an 8 lb. cannister of W-748, so I will be trying it soon.
I think IMR said 4895 was the powder they felt was best, but I am not sure.
