Where to find Abbreviations, Help please
I have reloaded for a few years (albeit only 2 types & the loads that were suggested and worked so well, Rem .17 & Win. 243) under qualified supervision but he has passed and now that I want to get more invloved with different rifles I can't find what the abbrevations mean for rifles or bullets. I know what HMR means (through this forum) but I certainly am not going to ask about each and every one I don't understand. Therefore, where can I find this info. Don't tell me to look in FAQ and my Lyman's 47th edition doesn't have them (though they use them, and I've gone cover to back cover looking for them) which leaves me at a loss. I have read anything that looked informative to the many questions I have, back through Oct 2005.....in this forum & others and that has caused my eye balls to bleed cause I just couldn't stop, too much cool, informative and humourous stuff.
You guys are the best because you share your knowledge, too many others want to seem superior so don't share. Thank you for any info now, and certainly in the future. Newbies should, IMHO, take a few hours to read back through at LEAST 15 pages because they will find most of their GENERAL questions answered there, BUT, you guys continue to answer these month after month and that is what makes you guys SO GREAT. Thanks for any direction to find what I require. Apology for long post. Reformed Luddite |

list off the ones you don't know and I'll try my best to answer.
If you're too ashamed to ask publicly, PM me, and no one will ever know.

Our own library here on TFL has a good listing of acronyms: http://www.thefiringline.com/library/acro/acron.html
scroll down to bullet design. If you don't see what you want to know there, don't hesitate to ask as caz223 has stated. |

Far to many to begin to list, it is the letters after rifles and bullets, I know what a hpbt is and a few others butman, there's a lot that make my imagination go crazy. Then there are comments like, my pet load is a Federal. Now what does that mean? Is Fed. primers? Don't know of Fed. bullets, heavy sigh

It's Not fun being a Luddite, reformed or not. This is the third time I've tried to reply to you, I do see info on "bullet design" and that is helpful for bullets. Now, what about rifles?

Long time ago, I was taught to spell things out the first time I mentioned them. Not everyone does that, but many do, so you often find the full term a sentence or two before the abbreviation. I'm mostly a cast bullet fellow so here are a handful of cast bullet terms.
GC = Gas check bnh = Brinell hardness DC= double cavity PB = Plain base (Also is a pistol powder) Pb = Lead Sn = Tin WW= Wheelweights WW+2% = Tin added to the WW Sb = Antimony WC= Wadcutter RN = Round Nose RNF = Round Nose Flat SWC = Semi Wadcutter KT = Keith type TC = Truncated cone DEWC = Double end wadcutter HP = Hollow Point HB = Hollow Base FWFL = a popular homemade bullet lube COL = Cartridge overall length |

Leftover, I thank you, however, I don't cast bullets but any knowledge is precious. Thanks....who knows, maybe I'll get into casting bullets someday. One day I came home from school to find my favourite cap pistol melting in a metal ladle on the stove.....it became a tap spigot, sigh.

AS follows:
The End of the World as We Know it. A reference for when the social fabric is gone and the s--- REALLY hits the fan. .338 Winchester Magnum FN= Fabrique Nationale- A Belgian consortiun that manufacturesr many things inc'd weapons FMJ= Full Metal Jacket Many of the others listed by you were simply designations of/for gun manufacturers rifle models. The last two I don't know. Hope it helps a bit. |

OOOPS,
My bad as to the first reference, I have no idea what that means. I hastily replied without looking carefully at the first one. |

Thanks Gary. I see a triangular symbol next to my and other posts regarding my post and my PC tells me "report bad post" which is freaking me out. What does this mean. I sent a private message to Jonny G. but as my name suggests I am new to the "modern marvels" and I don't know what to do next. Thank You

"SKS" is a rifle originally designed by a master gunsmith named Sergei Simonov and first built in Russia. The initials are loosely translated as Simonov Self-Loading Carbine System.
12FLV and 11GL are simply rifle models from Savage. I replied to your PM and explained the "report bad post" thingy. |

Big thanks to Mal & King. Got it Mal...don't quite understand but as long as I'm not doing bad, ok. The info from King was helpful, as for the rest of my WSSM etc questions I will wait until I talk with one of the Gun Range guys. Thanks a pile.

FAL= (I think) Fusil Automatique Leger = Light Automatic Rifle. French/Flemish/Walloon aren't my languages.
