Fire-Forming Brass/ Reduced Loads

The snow is going to be gone here in a few months so I figured it is time to get all of my brass prepped and ready to go.


I have a bunch of 300WSM brass that needs to be fire-formed. I also have a bunch of 130gr Hornady's just sitting on the shelf doing nothing. I would like to burm up these bullets and fire-form this brass using Hodgdon's reduced load 42.5gr of H4895. Hodgdon lists this with a pressure of 28,400 PSI.


Can a reduced load such as this be used to fire-form new brass, or do I need a stronger load to form the brass properly?

I've fire formed a bunch of 7mm TCU, 357 Herrett and 358 JDJ. I tried that 10% below start load. I think it takes a little more to get a good fire form.

Now a 300WSM is a high pressure unit . I think going around 40.000 would be better. Whats max? around 55.000

I was reading somewhere in one of my books that says that brass starts to flow at about 55.000 to 57.000 CUP.

In other words the brass starts to turn into a liquid. At 65.000 CUP I don't think the cases would last too many rounds. Maybe one or two reloads! If you can come up with a good load at around 45.000 to 50.000 CUP you could reload the case many times.

Not really.
'Flow' in this case means the material deforms permanently. You have exceeeded the elastic limit.
There are many rounds that are up to the 65,000 PSI mark and case life is acceptable if the rounds are reloaded correctly.
A case head is hardened more than the body of the case to allow sealing in the chamber while resisting the peak pressure.
One of the pressure signs is brass 'flowing' into the ejector hole. This small part of the case head is not suprted by the bolt and under pressure the brass can deform into the hole.
It is still not a liquid.
