A friend and I have decided to make a few tactical vests for ourselves. We have not been happy with the quality of other vests (Blackhawk/Eagle) for the high price they are charging so now Im looking for ideas. What do you like about the vests you have used, What dont you like about them, and What would you like to see on a vest that is not currently available. Also a list of what you normally carry with you when shooting etc. would be helpful.

I don't want any velcro, zippers, or mesh on a vest. Secure the mag pockets with nylon fasteners like the GI M-16 mag pouches or plain old snaps. I've got one made by FMCO several years ago that I like well enough.

Take a look at the Safariland Cover6 series... Hell of a vest... But the coolest thing is it ability to be customized... THAT would be GREAT on a regular tac vest!

Body armor should be incorporated into it, saving yourseves from a separate vest. Unless you are dedicated to specific missions, go with Fusby's suggestion of making it modular. That way you can tailor it to meet your needs.
I dislike velcro. "Riiiipppp!" Don't care for those fasteners (like on the M16 ammo pouch) since they require more dexterity to use - something which declines with stress. Snaps for me since gross motor functions are easier to perform. ------------------ Vigilantibus et non dormientibus jura subveniunt |

Now, Rob, you've just given Lenny MacGill an idea for his next videotape series. You should get a cut of the proceeds.

Stevie Nicks naked with the wind blowing through her long blond locks singing "Stand Back"!!!
Ok ok...I'd like to see one with Class IIIa body armor built in and a series of elastic loops for shotgun shells. No flaps or other such nonsense to get in the way. A nice crossdraw holster for a full sized pistol would be nice as well. - Anthony |
