Shooting Bench … the good … the bad

I am looking to either build or purchase a shooting bench for the range out behind Edge-Works. The bench will be primarily an aid for zeroing sights and also a training aid for new shooters (i.e. my children as they become ready to learn)

I have an idea of what I want however, there are many shooters here that have more experience then I.

What are the feature that make for a great shooting bench ? Should I buy it … or build it? What accessories go well with it that that work ? and last what things are just a waist of time or money?

On the topic of bench rests, wher can I find plans for a portable bench?

I've built my own using my own design but have had the opportunity to scope out a great number of aftermarket tables. Without doubt the best of the breed is a $500 unit with individually adjusting legs. It allows level rotating set up on any terrain. The name escapes me but I'll look it up and repost.

But for your range, why screw with a portable? Precision Shooter had a plans for a neat concrete / cinder block table a few years ago. Used very similar tables at the Yolo County range in California. Very, very stable and fairly cheap to build.

Bob,
For the next 12 months it will need to be portable as I have leased my field to a friend who grows sod. He keeps the place beautiful. However one day he will want to harvest his crop. When he is finished he will replant. In the mean time he has done a wonderful job of grading and draining the fields (no more mud puddles) and the best part is I don’t have to cut the grass.
