Ruger SA 45 Colt with either 260 gr SWC @ 1000 fps, or 325 gr SWC @ 1250 fps, depending on what's in at the moment (whether I've been in grizzly country recently) or a smith 29 w/ 250 gr SWC @ 1000 fps.
Also leaning against the wall by the bed and door are a Winchester carbine w/ 170 gr 30-30 loads, and a 45-70 1886 carbine w/ 400 gr Barnes loads @ 1850 fps. either ought to do, depnding on how big the intruder is, and how much fur/teeth it has. As far as the 00 buck and bears go, buck isn't as reliable as slugs or a heavy rifle. Last edited by Malamute; June 13, 2005 at 09:41 AM. |

I keep a Tarus Mod.66 (357) loaded with 158 gr. jhp's, wify-poo has a Rossi Model 92 (lever action rifle) also loaded with the the same ammo, and my son keeps a 12 ga. Mavrick loaded with some "special" shells. They look like flat lead disks...I also keep 4 speed loaders ready...figure 30 rounds with the speed loaders and another 8 rounds from the rifle, plus add in the 5 rounds from the shotgun..that would be enough noise to raise the dead!

I'm not sure exactly how I want to load my 870 for HD. How much of an overpenetration danger is there with something like the Federal reduced-recoil 8 pellet 00? Ammoman has it for a good price ($119/250).

Why not...I'm feeling left out...
2 very large Bullmastiff's. If I'm already in bed I just open the bedroom door and unleash the hounds. After that it's pretty much the same routine as before I went to bed the first time....Let them out to do their business after they're done EATING. If we're not already asleep the crew will never let the BG's anywhere near the house to begin with. If that fails there's always the 870 with 00buck or the USP45Tactical with night sights, UTL and flash suppressor. |

right now it would be....
my very powerful trusty mossberg 500A 12 gauge. much A$$ is kicked when the trigger is pulled. I can handle the 2.75 shells pretty good even though I am lanky. I dont think that the kick is that bad when you use the smaller shells.

My new HD is my SW625jm. Loaded with Winchester WB .45 Auto, 230GR. JHP. And, 3 extra moon clips along side... Oh, my backup is my Winchester 1300 .12GA Pump with a 22" Brl...

I'm so horrible at the moment, I shot up the entire box of Winchester USA 9mm 115gr JHP's(which worked very well in my gun), so until I get another box, 115gr ball is better than nothing... then again, first choice still lies with the 12 gauge

OO Buck Kicks Hard
It seems to be the preferred load. I think it's right for the job too. Just a word of caution to anyone not familiar with it; it kicks hard. If you haven't loaded it before, I suggest you go and try a few rounds. It will soon teach you to pull the shotgun well in when shooting these loads.

glock
My home defense gun (the one that has bullets in the mags near my night stand) is a glock17 with a M3 light. Because it's good enough for indoor, high capacity, and my cheapest firearm. I don't want the cops to take my other guns in the gunsafe such as the ar-15, expensive 1911s, etc.. i'll just give them the glock if they want it for evidence (without the M3).
What would the cops think if I blasted a BG with the ar-15 with the surefire pressure activated vertical grip, EOTech, collapsable stock, and beta C-mag 100 round drum. I might explain to the cop that an AR-15 has potentially less penetration through walls than a 9mm, and the high powerd light and holographic optics plus rifle as the shooting platform allow for better accuracy than the 9mm handgun so less chance of having stray shots hit innocent bystanders, and... ya right the cop will take one look at the ar-15 and go uh-huh.... |

As long as the 12 gauge is up against your shoulder, the magnum loads arn't bad at all.
The S&B stuff doesn't have nearly as much a kick, but makes a nice pattern.

It's blue and yes it's very blinding at least to me. I got it for 10 bucks. I don't know the brand but it says "Tactical Gear" on the side. At first I thought no way I would rely on this POS but it turned out to be of good quality and is very small and light.
