Not sure the 'safe' distance but I know for a fact you can head down to many sporting goods stores and buy rimfire/centerfire spinners.

Wear as much safety gear as you care to wear... Hearing and eye protection at the very minimum. And stand as far back as you can stand and still hope to hit the targets... seems to me thats about as safe as you can get under the circumstances.

1/8 inch isn't thick and most handguns are going to crater that....or better. Eventually you'll get some bounce back. I'd shoot 'em no closer than 15 yards and ALWAYS wear good eye protection.

I've seen a bullet bounce back from a bowling pin at 25' & smack the guy in the forehead hard enough to draw blood.
Glasses are always important. |

ed1921, what was the guy shooting? I mean caliber wise. MG! I never heard of a bullet traveling that far straight back!

I had a 200 gr semiwadcutter from a .45 take a bad hop off of a rock at an IDPA match and draw an inch long cut along the side of my head. It came 20 yards straight back at me.

I agree, 1/8" isn't thick enough. commercial targets run 1/4" for rimefire and 3/8" for handguns (with non fmj lead bullets recomended).
