calwestco J-22 breakdown

Just recently my father got my mom's old J-22 out, cleaned it up and tried to fire it. He told me it didn't function like it was supposed to. My question is, how do one remove the slide? I tried the method that normally works for removing slides, but "normally" isn't today. Is there a special trick to this firearm?

you push on the firing pin/ hammer on the back of the slide then pull back. the slide falls off... too me weeks to figure it out myself.
