CALIFORNIANS: What are you selling?

Okay, I'm tired of seeing some nice guns for sale outside of California.
For those in other states who don't know, unless the Peepul's Republik of Kalifornia has your gun on their "approved" handgun list, you can't sell it to a California resident.

CA residents should know that a handgun not on the list which is sold to a dealer will usually end up being sold out-of-state, which translates into lower prices for your used guns.

So what handguns are Californians selling? Post 'em! Pics are desireable, but keep 'em sized to no bigger than 640x480 so we're not scrolling all over the place to see your fine guns.

Any S&W Model 58's?
Any Colt Commanders you want to let go?
How about a S&W 332 you decided wasn't the perfect gun?

The dealers around here won't take any handgun in trade unless it's on the "list". They will, however, sell them on consigment so it still makes all the pre-list handguns avaliable. You can still buy the older handguns through a private party transfer.

I'm seeing just the oposite on gun prices. Because the dealers charge 20% to sell a gun on consignment, the seller has to ask more for the gun in order to get what he wants for it. Prices just keep going up.

In general it makes little sense to sell a gun to a dealer, cuz you lose money on it. Selling on consignment, or to another individual, either someone you know, or met at a gun show or online, is a private party transfer and gets you more money for your effort. The sale must go through a dealer and be properly drosed. Many guns not on the list make it into California and are sold this way.

Bill, since you are in the bay area I assume you are familiar with the stores out here and know what shows up on their shelves as consignment pieces. I've seen some of the guns you mention now and again.

Pics of some of my Ca. bought guns (absent some I ain't took pics of yet or that are posted elsewhere) can be seen at www.hunt101.com if you hit search under my name.

Magsnubby - I've seen some beautiful older guns sold to pawn shops or gun shops for their "wholesale" cash value. Unfortunately, those sellers are usually family members who inherit a gun and just want to sell it off, not realizing that once sold to a dealer it will end up going out of state.

There are consignment guns in a lot of shops and some are at good prices. But too many are guns that have been well used or in some cases tinkered to death but the seller wants more than a new gun with all the trinkets. I can't tell you how many "Frankenstein-1911s" I've seen -- blued gun with stainless beavertail, barrel bushing, combat trigger topped with huge target sights -- for the price of a new Colt or Kimber! I looked at a S&W Model 27 6" that was fairly beat, lots of exterior wear, deep groove in the cylinder, but the seller was asking $685 because it was a "rare" 5-inch model with a 3x scope mounted on it. Sorry.

TIPOC -- You're correct that private party transfers into CA can be done, however finding a dealer willing to do it is another matter. For some reason this appears to be a "gray area" with a number of dealers. By the way, that's quite a nice collection. No Model 58's you wanna part with?

I have sold a Kahr K9, Glock 26, Kimber Ultra CDP II and an M59/66 on Gunbroker. All of those went out of my state (California).

I sold a Beretta Jetfire some months ago to a coworker. For the money I was asking I didn't think it'd be worth paying any type of fee for a classified. This was before joining TFL though.

Right now I have an H&K USP Expert I can't seem to get rid of.

Seems like lots of people selling their S&W around here. A load of them in the dealer shelfs around here too.
I personally prefer HK/Glock/Sig stuff, never really like wheel guns.

Bill,
My experience may be a little different from yours as I haven't had a problem with dealers and PPTs. It's probably cuz they know they'll get my buisness they are more than willing to help out. State law also says that if they are in buisness they have to.

As you know at the T&S shows in S.J., Lisa does most of the transfers and is willing to do them anytime. She works out of Santa Clara if I remember right. Mike at the Gun Exchange is helpful as are K.C. and the folks at Kerley's. Gina and Al up to Imbert and Smither's are willing to bring in new customers. Mike, Ted and John over to Krausewerk do the job as well. Frank Tabor can be gruff but smile at that and some talk of CAS wins him over. The folks at Trader's can be indifferent but they also do what the law requires. Reeds does them as well if you don't require a smile. The Cow Palace show comes up this weekend and folks who do the transfers there can be met.

No M58's, they are scarce round here. If I get ready to sell or trade anything I'll send you a private message on one of the forums though. If we offer this to each other we can recycle our pieces and be sure of the quality of the guns or at least know their problems going in. Any piece I sell or trade can be test fired here locally and you'll get to meet someone willing to do a dros.

The dealers are caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place when it comes to used handguns. I know one dealer who has a safe full of NIB handguns that were in his inventory when the drop test went into effect. These are all handguns that are not on the list so he transfered them into his name. It cost him a small fortune because he had to pay the sales tax on all of them.

His idea was to sell them on consigment as private party transfers. Atleast he would get his money back and maybe make a little profit. Since he's an FFL dealer he called the DOJ to see if it would be legal (you never know about the DOJ). The DOJ put the kibosh on that idea. They basically told him "Yeah it's legal...but i guarntee you we'll investigate you if you do". He decided he would just leave them to his kids when he dies.

My son took a friend to a pawn shop about 2 weeks ago. When they returned he asked me "Dad, how much would a used Glock 23 be wortht? It looks like new, he had the box and all the papers on it. He said it had less than a box of rounds through it". I figured about $450.00. The pawnshop offered him $150.00 for it. I wanted to cry.

Rest assured that if I ever have to sell a non approved gun, I will seek out a fellow Kalifornian first.

No offense to the folks from the United States.
