There are different ways to look at the type of gun you need. For today I'd like to compare guns by the yard i.e. what handgun, shotgun, long-gun, would you use for the following ranges. I don't necessarily own all of these guns now, but I may shortly (unless I change my mind). Also, they should be legal to own. Change the yardage if you don't like the way I broke it out.

(topic has been edited combining former 1&2)

1.) 0-25 yards - Glock 23

2.) 25 - 100 yards - Rem 870 HD 18", Vang comp & ported, Fed low recoil tactical slugs and 00 buck. Or Kel-tec Sub 40.

3.) 100 - 300 yards - M1a scout

4.) 300 - 700 yards - Rem Model 700 Sendero, .300 win mag

5.) 700+ yards - ?

According to a recent thread in the Handgun section.... Here goes.

0-3 yards, knife or shovel.
3-1000 yards, M-4 Carbine with iron sights.

Really, this is mostly an academic discussion but I'll also take a stab at it.

0-25 yards -- Remington 870.
25-200 yards -- CAR-15
200-1000 yards -- Winchester M70 with 6-20x scope. Caliber 300WM
1000 yards and beyond -- Laser designator and the United States Air Force.
