I am a Conservative Democrat, which makes me a moderate overall (thus I have my right wing issues, chiefly RKBA and military issues, and my more left wing issues, and many in the middle) but by Maryland standards I am pretty right wing. Likewise, Ehrlich is a liberal Republican, a moderate overall, but by Maryland standards he is right wing (he is being protrayed as far-right because he signed the Contract With America in 1994 ).There is no way anyone more conservative can be elected (right now) in this state, and with the MD electorate voting for a third party may as well be a vote for the Democrat. However, his election will put a Republican in the governor's office and break the decades old deadlock the Democratic party has had on the office. This will do several things. First, people will see that the world doesn't fall apart with someone who is moderately conservative in office (in fact many things will get better) so they may be more likely to take a chance on a conservative later. Second, he IS a Republican so he will put more conservatives into appointed positions (where much of the REAL power is). Third, his policies will be more pro-business, hopefully luring more businesses in, thus drawing more people who don't work for the federal government (potentially conservatives) into the state. Hopefully this will make a future Republican's success more likely. Next, if he does a good job that will make it easier for the next (and possibly more conservative) Republican to win. Also, most of the "gun control" legislation he supports already is law so while he may not reverse some of the current abuses, and CCW won't go anywhere, at least he won't make things worse (can't say that about KKT). Last (and related to the last one), on RKBA and most other issues, the prospect of a Gov. Ehrlich sure beats the prospect of a Gov. Townsend. |
