Dry firing the 870?

Can the Remington 870 be safely dry fired?

Yes, you can. Snap caps or something similar would be nice but not mandatory.

There's been reports of dry firing during very cold weather causing firing pins to break, but I've no first hand info. Putting in a new one is not terribly hard.
